Jewel Thief Review: Saif Ali Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat’s Netflix heist action thriller is an inconsistent ride of entertainment

Plot

In simpler terms, the character Rajan Aulakh (played by Jaideep Ahlawat) is eagerly planning to steal The Red Sun, an extraordinary African diamond, which will be displayed at a high-security art gallery in India. He believes that only one person, Jewel Thief Rehan Roy (portrayed by Saif Ali Khan), possesses the skills for this task. Rajan realizes that persuading Rehan won’t be straightforward, so he deceives his father (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) into committing a crime and then uses the evidence against Rehan to compel him to work for him.

At first hesitant, Rehan – who had been forced out of his home by his father three years ago – eventually consents to undertake the assignment.

What works for Jewel Thief?

Enjoying it when Saif Ali Khan portrays roles that highlight his stylish and intelligent personality, coupled with exciting action sequences, offers a distinctive joy for viewers. For fans who are still reminiscing about Ranvir Singh from Race, there are plenty of reasons to appreciate Saif in Jewel Thief. His confrontation with Jaideep Ahlawat significantly enhances the entertainment factor.

Performing the robbery mid-air boosts the enjoyment factor since it’s packed with unexpected surprises and plot twists. The execution of the heist plotline in the latter half enhances the movie.

What doesn’t work for Jewel Thief?

In my perspective, this movie seems to take its sweet time finding its rhythm, with the first hour feeling rather exhausting. Sadly, I didn’t find Saif’s performance up to par in this piece. Many of his lines seem outdated, and the overall dramatic flow appears quite commonplace.

The second part becomes more intriguing, yet fails to captivate fully due to the lopsided chase dynamic. Kunal Kapoor portrays Vikram Patel as a tenacious cop who should be giving Rehan a run for his money, but unfortunately, Rehan consistently outsmarts him, which undermines the movie’s intended impact.

In a less formal way, one could say: There seems to be more focus on glamour than emotion in Saif Ali Khan and Nikita Dutta’s romantic storyline, and it feels like they’re falling short of delivering a truly engaging love story. The music doesn’t add much depth either, with only the song “Jaadu” standing out, but unfortunately, it’s saved for the finale.

Performances & Direction

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must share my thoughts on a recent production that showcases Saif Ali Khan’s captivating charm, witty humor, and electrifying action. However, his performance seems uneven, perhaps due to some inconsistencies in the scriptwriting. Jaideep Ahlawat delivers an impressive act, although it doesn’t quite reach his peak potential. Nikkita Dutta is given limited opportunities to showcase her talent; she manages a few shining moments amidst a scarcity of such instances.

Kookie Gulati and Robbie Grewal have crafted a grand-scale film for Netflix viewers, but the directing didn’t quite manage to shape it into a fully satisfying action-heist-thriller experience.

Final Verdict of Jewel Thief

If you’re looking for something light-hearted to pass the time this weekend, “Jewel Thief” might just be the perfect choice. Gather your loved ones, lower your expectations a bit, and I assure you, it won’t disappoint.
