CNN is losing one of its more high-profile anchors amid a larger programming pivot.
Jim Acosta, previously known as the White House correspondent and current host of the 10 a.m. slot on a well-respected cable news network, is planning to leave the company, according to a reliable source who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter.
Last week, CNN announced significant adjustments to its programming schedule, introducing an early morning edition of “The Situation Room.” This new version will be co-hosted by Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown during the hour. As per reports from former CNN media correspondent Oliver Darcy, who initially disclosed Acosta’s departure, he was given the option to host in the late-night slot, which would have been airing on the West coast. However, this time frame is generally considered a less-watched period.
Acosta becomes the notable figure leaving CNN as part of the restructuring plans led by CEO Mark Thompson. Last week, Thompson also informed the team about their intention to reduce the workforce by a few hundred people, focusing on a shift towards digital platforms and the development of a new streaming service.
During his first term, the anchor served as a counterpoint to President Trump, leading to the withdrawal of his White House “hard pass,” which subsequently led CNN to file a lawsuit.
