As a child of the late ’90s and early 2000s, I hold a special fondness for the cinematic interpretations of our favorite Christmas tales, among which lies the timeless gem that is “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” from the year 2000. To this day, I firmly believe it to be one of the finest festive films ever crafted – a sentiment I share with none other than the inimitable Jim Carrey himself!
Although I don’t indulge in as many Christmas movies and specials as I once did, there are a handful that remain close to my heart. One of these is the 2000 adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which I believe stands among the finest holiday films ever made. Compared to the 1966 animated special, it might not reach the same heights, but Jim Carrey’s portrayal of the grumpy green character still holds a special place in my affections – he certainly embodies one of Seuss’ many sociopathic characters perfectly! With Carrey recently stating his conditions for reprising The Grinch, I must confess that I’m secretly hoping this could become a reality.
During an interview discussing his return as Dr. Ivo Robotnik and debut as Gerald Robotnik in the upcoming 2024 movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Carrey was queried by ComicBook about a character he’d like to portray again if given another chance. He responded:
Wow, just imagine, unraveling the mystery of the Grinch, you know? On that special day, I’d transform myself, layers upon layers of makeup, struggling for breath. Oh, it was an agonizing ordeal! The kids were constantly on my mind throughout. ‘For the children, for the children, for the children.’ Now, with motion capture technology, I can be liberated to explore other creative avenues. This world is full of possibilities!
If you’ve ever delved into the behind-the-scenes of “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” it won’t surprise you to learn that the makeup was a challenge for Jim Carrey. Applying the Grinch makeup took approximately 2.5 hours every day, and he once compared the process and wearing the costume to feeling like he was being buried alive. While this role is considered one of Carrey’s best performances, it seems the strain on him as an actor is clear, which may explain why he’s hesitant to reprise the part again.
If Jim Carrey is open to portraying The Grinch using motion capture technology, including wearing the appropriate gear, I wholeheartedly support this idea. To clarify, I’d prefer this to be a sequel to his first “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” rather than a simple retelling of the story. Given that an animated “Grinch” movie featuring Benedict Cumberbatch was released only six years ago, and considering it’s been over two decades since Carrey’s Grinch returned the gifts to the Whos and joined their community, I’m excited to see him bring more hilarious jokes and one-liners to life in this new story.
Approximately a year after rumors about Jim Carrey working on “The Grinch 2” were proven false, it’s encouraging to learn that he is now open to revisiting the character. Should he eventually decide to take on the role again, we’ll make sure to share the news with you. In the meantime, catch Carrey’s latest comedic exploits when “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” premieres in theaters on December 20.
