As a longtime fan who has witnessed Jim Carrey’s transformative journey from the limelight to the canvas and back again, it’s fascinating to see him return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The man is a chameleon, able to adapt his talents to various mediums with ease, much like the titular speedster himself.
Jim Carrey is getting candid about his reason for returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
The long-retired actor, who has largely avoided acting and public attention for the past ten years, recently shared with the Associated Press his reasons for returning to portray the villainous character Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming sequel, set to hit cinemas on December 20th.
Carrey confessed, while grinning, that he returned to this world for two main reasons: one, the opportunity to portray a genius character, which is quite an expansive role for him. Two, financially speaking, he had amassed a lot of possessions and needed income.
After a successful stint as an actor during the ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s, the star of “Ace Ventura” has become quite choosy about the projects he accepts these days. In fact, in 2022, while promoting “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” he shared with Access Hollywood that he was considering retiring from acting altogether.
At that moment, he emphasized that he was being sincere. However, his decision hinges on a condition: if divine messengers present a crucial message inscribed in gold, he may persist on his path. Otherwise, he plans to take some time off.
Before any discussions about retirement, the actor famously known for “Dumb and Dumber” was already showing signs of leaving Hollywood behind, instead focusing on nurturing his talent in political cartooning, another area of interest for him.
Jim Carrey explained to The Hollywood Reporter in 2018 that he no longer wished to remain involved in the business. He was displeased with how things were going, specifically the increasing influence of corporations and all the complications that came with it. Perhaps it was his attraction towards a different form of creative expression that drew him away, and he found solace in painting – the freedom of not having someone dictate ideas based on market trends or demographics.
Besides Dr. Robotnik, Carrey lends his voice to Gerald Robotnik, the villain’s grandfather, in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The cast is made up of Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba, James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, and Krysten Ritter as well.
