Jim Carrey’s ‘The Mask’ Gets a Potential Remake

One of Jim Carrey’s standout films, “The Mask,” is rumored to get a fresh update, hinted by Richard Brener, the president and chief content officer of New Line. If certain requirements are met, a remake of “The Mask” could potentially be underway, exciting fans of the original green character who have long anticipated an R-rated version of the 1994 comedy. This adaptation could delve deeper into the gory aspects inspired by its source material and bring a more faithful comic book rendition of the story to modern audiences.

During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Brener was directly questioned about the possibility of New Line, the studio behind the original big-screen Carrey classic, remaking The Mask. He hinted that it might be on the cards, but stressed that certain conditions must be met for the project to move forward. The key points he mentioned were securing “suitable directors” and “appropriate actors” for the roles, under those circumstances, he affirmatively replied, “Yes. It’s a terrific concept for a film.

Under the guidance of director Chuck Russell, the film titled The Mask takes a somewhat loose inspiration from the main character in the comic books, Stanley Ipkiss. In this cinematic adaptation, Jim Carrey embodies the role of our protagonist whose life is flipped on its head after encountering a mystical mask that triggers a transformation from a timid, kind man into a boisterous troublemaker with a green face. This newfound bravado and charisma, stemming from his alternate persona, piques the interest of local nightclub singer Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz). However, matters escalate further when he becomes the focus of villain Dorian Tyrell’s (Peter Greene) malevolent intentions, along with his group of henchmen.

Did ‘The Mask’ Ever Get a Sequel?

Despite not meeting everyone’s expectations for an R-rated film, the adaptation of The Mask still got many things right, as demonstrated by its financial and critical success. The movie successfully transformed a budget of $23 million into a global box office revenue of $350 million and garnered an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Consequently, it was no surprise when a sequel was announced. However, the original plans for the sequel fell through, leading to the 2005 follow-up Son of the Mask being produced without Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz. This spinoff was a commercial failure and received negative reviews from critics, ultimately causing the franchise to be temporarily shelved.

Although over three decades have gone by since the initial release of “The Mask“, this outrageous comedy continues to captivate audiences, even garnering popularity as a streaming success on Paramount+. This suggests that there remains ample enthusiasm for a potential sequel, providing someone is inclined to produce one. Carrey has expressed readiness to reprise his role, albeit jokingly cautioning “somebody stop me”, and Diaz recently hinted at her possible return “if Jim’s on board.” Essentially, the question now lies in whether anyone wishes to breathe new life into the character of Ipkiss.
