As a long-time fan of Asian representation in media and a connoisseur of a good mystery, I’m absolutely thrilled about Hulu’s upcoming limited series “Interior Chinatown.” The trailer alone has me hooked! With Taika Waititi at the helm as pilot director and Charles Yu as showrunner, this series promises to deliver an engaging story that resonates deeply.
In the heart of Chinatown, things always stay the same, as depicted by Willis Wu, played by Jimmy O. Yang, at the start of the trailer for Interior Chinatown.
Hulu has unveiled the teaser and promotional images for an upcoming limited series. Taika Waititi is at the helm as director for the pilot episode, while Charles Yu is the author and head of production; this series is adapted from Yu’s 2020 novel. Ronny Chieng, Chloe Bennet, Lisa Gilroy, Sullivan Jones, Archie Kao, and Diana Lin have been added to the cast alongside Yang.
The series revolves around Willis, a minor character stuck in a cop drama titled “Black & White“. As explained by Hulu’s description, “Willis carries out his on-screen duties as a waiter, yearning for a life beyond Chinatown and seeking to star in his own narrative. When Willis unwittingly witnesses a crime, he starts peeling back layers of a criminal underbelly within Chinatown, while also unearthing his family’s hidden past and experiencing the thrill of being in the limelight.
In the trailer, my character mentions a mystery unfolding in Chinatown. Alongside Yang, I join forces to unravel this enigma we’re both drawn into.
Although the preview emphasizes a sense of enigma, it equally highlights numerous action sequences. In a narrated message by Willis, we’re warned that kung fu could erupt at any instant, followed by a swift transition to a thrilling fight between Yang and Chieng.
The 10-episode series is manufactured by 20th Television. Yu, Waiti, Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore from Rideback, Jeff Skoll, Miura Kite, and Elsie Choi of Participant, Garrett Basch from Dive, and John Lee are all serving as executive producers on this project.
On November 19th, every installment of the mini-series will be available on Hulu. You can preview the entire trailer down below.
