Joaquin Phoenix Abruptly Quit and 'It Has Been a Nightmare' Says Producer

As a long-time follower and admirer of the independent film scene, particularly the groundbreaking work of Killer Films and Todd Haynes, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent turn of events surrounding Joaquin Phoenix‘s departure from Haynes’ upcoming project. Having witnessed the significant strides made by Vachon in promoting LGBTQ+ narratives and nurturing diverse talent, it is disheartening to see this incident unfold.

The filmmaker Todd Haynes, who produced the romantic movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, has spoken up regarding the incident where Phoenix unexpectedly left the set just four days before shooting began. Christine Vachon, producer and founder of Killer Films, which is producing the movie, took to Facebook to discuss Phoenix’s sudden departure. Following the media reports about Phoenix’s mysterious choice to leave the project, Vachon chose not to provide extensive details about the matter in her statement.

“This event, as it transpired, was truly harrowing. If I haven’t reached out or responded to your call recently, let me explain. The reason is this very incident. Now, I kindly ask that you refrain from pointing fingers or criticizing us for casting a straight actor. This project was his brainchild, and the performer has a strong history of collaborating with LGBTQ actors, crew, and directors. If anyone feels inclined to judge by saying ‘that’s what you get…’ please reconsider, as such remarks only exacerbate an already difficult situation.”

According to Variety, the actor unexpectedly withdrew from a film set in Guadalajara, Mexico, five days prior to production commencement without providing an explanation. This left the local crew in a bind as they were anticipating payment, with producers scrambling to find a way to carry on with the project. The sudden move by Phoenix sparked curiosity among audiences, given his unconventional acting style. Some speculated that his decision may have been influenced by the film’s LGBTQ+ content and its initial rating classification as NC-17.

In the realm of social media, I’ve noticed a wave of criticism aimed at Vachon and Haynes for casting Phoenix, who identifies as straight, in a role that is queer-centric. This seems odd given Vachon’s advocacy, especially since Phoenix was an integral part of the project from its inception. Regardless, these criticisms haven’t deterred people from expressing their discontent. As Kit Williamson eloquently puts it on X, “This situation clearly illustrates that studios are hesitant to produce high-budget ‘gay films’ unless they have a straight lead. This is true even in a Todd Haynes production. Even if it means losing millions. They prefer not to recast, as they believe a gay actor lacks the star power they require.”

In this project, which we, Joaquin, Jon Raymond, and I, jointly crafted, we’ll all share the story credit. It feels innovative, invigorating, and full of life! Haynes mentioned that it’s a love story from the 1930s, featuring an interracial couple who might seem like an improbable pair at first glance. The film also features Danny Ramirez, known for his roles in “Top Gun: Maverick” and “No Exit”, alongside Joaquin.

“The movie is (or was) a joint effort between Vachon and Haynes, following a series of successful productions such as ‘Safe’, ‘Velvet Goldmine’, ‘Far From Heaven’, ‘I’m Not There’, and ‘Carol’. Killer Films, an independent film production company, has been part of films like ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’, ‘Kill Your Darlings’, ‘Still Alice’, ‘First Reformed’, and ‘Past Lives’, among others. Vachon’s role as a producer played a significant part in the growth of the independent film industry during the 1990s, and she has been instrumental in numerous influential LGBTQ+ films over the past three decades.

As Phoenix prepares for the promotional tour of the upcoming “Joker: Folie à Deux,” there’s uncertainty about his involvement in director Haynes’ movie. It remains to be seen if the project will move forward, given that Phoenix played a significant role in shaping the original film.
