Joaquin Phoenix Recalls Lady Gaga “Spitting Up Coffee the First Time I Sang” in ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for immersive storytelling and a deep appreciation for character development, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming release of “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Having been captivated by Joaquin Phoenix‘s portrayal of Arthur Fleck in the first installment, I eagerly await his return to the silver screen alongside the enigmatic and talented Lady Gaga.

The first response Lady Gaga had when she heard Joaquin Phoenix sing in “Joker: Folie à Deux” is an experience he’s unlikely to ever forget.

In the upcoming musical sequel to the 2019 film “Joker,” directed by Todd Phillips, the actor reprising his role as Arthur Fleck/Joker shared his experience performing alongside Lady Gaga, who not only portrays Lee/Harley Quinn but is also a renowned Grammy-winning vocalist.

Phoenix casually mentioned during his interview with Empire magazine that he seemed to recall her throwing up coffee for the first time I sang, which gave him a sense of satisfaction, excitement, and boosted his confidence.

Together, he teamed up with the singer from “Shallow” to develop a harmonious musical dynamic for their characters in the eagerly awaited movie, based on their personalities.

“Lady Gaga often encouraged, ‘Follow your instincts, it’s okay,'” Phoenix stated. “This can be both awkward and thrilling for someone like me, who isn’t used to performing in such a manner.”

The actor from “Beau Is Afraid” elaborated on the significance of music for his character, particularly because Arthur Fleck is said to possess an innate musical ability, as director Phillips mentioned in the initial release.

“Phoenix emphasized the significance of preserving the raw, at times imperfect quality,” he said. “Arthur was brought up listening to these tunes on the radio. He’s not a trained singer; he should sound like an everyday person who suddenly breaks into song while taking a shower.”

In “Joker: Folie à Deux”, scheduled for release on October 4, we find failed comedian Arthur Fleck who encounters his soulmate, Harley Quinn, during his time in Arkham State Hospital. Upon his release, this couple embarks on a tragic romantic journey together.

Previously, Lady Gaga disclosed to Empire magazine about altering her vocal performance for her portrayal of Harley Quinn in the film, stating that it was an unprecedented endeavor compared to any she had undertaken previously.

“You might recognize me by my stage name, Lady Gaga. In this context, that’s who I am as a performer, but it’s important to note that this film is not about me; I’m portraying a character. Therefore, I put in a lot of effort to adapt my singing style to suit the character of Lee and to sing in a way that doesn’t reflect my usual performance style.”
