Jodie Foster has been awarded the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Limited Series, specifically for her performance in “True Detective: Night Country”. This marks her third Golden Globe victory. With an impressive resume including two Academy Awards, three BAFTA Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award, it’s understandable that I might feel someone else more deserving won. In this case, Cristin Milioti for “The Penguin” stood out to me, but in all honesty, each nominee this year seemed more worthy of the award than Foster.
Apart from Milioti for “The Penguin”, Cate Blanchett for “Disclaimer”, Sofía Vergara for “Griselda”, Kate Winslet for “The Regime”, and Naomi Watts for “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” in the same category, there were other remarkable performances. Notably, Naomi Watts, as is her custom, metamorphosed herself superbly this time, portraying Barbara “Babe” Paley, a magazine editor and socialite, in the second season of Ryan Murphy’s “Feud” anthology series. She embodied elegance, humor, and was spot-on with the nuances of the production that reflected the specific period.
Griselda stands out as one of the rare projects that effectively showcases Sofia Vergara’s dramatic abilities beyond her recurring Modern Family character being humorously stereotyped for her English skills. Similarly, Kate Winslet, impressively portrayed in last year’s Lee, was captivating with her regal demeanor, imposing presence, and cunning subtlety in The Regime; while the series itself is a blend of reactions, most could agree that she delivered an exceptional performance. Lastly, Cate Blanchett displayed an intricate complexity in Alfonso Cuarón’s masterfully crafted miniseries, combining her signature cool intellect with a more vulnerable, emotional edge.
Among all the nominees, Cristin Milioti stands out as a surprising contender. Her exceptional portrayal of Sofia Falcone in The Penguin was widely praised as a standout moment in an already impressive series. Her character, complex and emotionally charged, held its own against Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb. Despite Farrell winning the Best Actor in a Limited Series for his performance, it was his remarkable makeup team that received recognition (which he gratefully acknowledged in his acceptance speech). Milioti, however, didn’t have such assistance, and yet managed to create a character unlike any she’s portrayed before in her career or on television. Therefore, while we honor Ms. Jodie Foster, it is my belief that Milioti has been underappreciated and deserves an apology from TV fans everywhere.
