The BBC has officially announced the complete lineup for the four-part drama “Dear England,” a series inspired by James Graham’s Olivier Award-winning play about Gareth Southgate and the English men’s football team. Notable actors Jodie Whittaker, best known from “Dr. Who,” Jason Watkins who was part of “The Crown,” and British actor Daniel Ryan (“The Bay”) are joining the main cast.
Actor Joseph Fiennes, known for his roles in Shakespeare in Love and The Handmaid’s Tale, is set to reprise his stage role as Gareth Southgate, the England football manager who led a team with an underwhelming history in penalty shootouts. Meanwhile, Jodie Whittaker will take on the role of team psychologist Pippa Grange, Luke Watkins will portray Greg Dyke, the former FA chairman, and Steve Holland’s character will be played by Jonathan Ryan.
Multiple actors from the stage production are set to repeat their parts for television. Among them is John Hodgkinson, reprising his role as ex-FA chairman Greg Clarke, while Adam Hugill takes on Harry Maguire, Josh Barrow portrays Jordan Pickford, and Lewis Shepherd embodies Dele Alli.
In addition to the main actors, we have Will Antenbring portraying Harry Kane, Edem-Ita Duke taking on the role of Marcus Rashford, Francis Lovehall as Raheem Sterling, Abdul Sessay playing Bukayo Saka, and Jacob Greenway assuming the character of Jude Bellingham.
Presented as a work of fiction derived from thorough research and interviews, Dear England made its premiere at the National Theatre in 2023 to widespread praise, securing the Olivier Award for outstanding new play.
On the series, James Graham assumes roles as both writer and executive producer. Rupert Goold, who helmed the stage adaptation, will direct the premiere episode. Subsequent episodes two through four will be directed by Paul Whittington. Tina Pawlik is handling production duties. The executive producers are James Graham, Rupert Goold, Andy Harries and Rebecca Hodgson from Left Bank Pictures, as well as Jo McClellan and Sami El-Hadi for the BBC.
Filming is currently taking place in the south of England, produced by Left Bank Pictures. This series is set to debut on both BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the year 2026. International distribution will be handled by Sony Pictures Television.
