Following more than ten years portraying the Avengers’ leader and main character of Marvel, Iron Man (Tony Stark), Robert Downey Jr. is preparing to swap his heroic role for a more ominous journey, as he takes on the villain, Doctor Doom (Victor Von Doom), in two forthcoming Marvel movies.
In a chat with Entertainment Tonight, directors Joe and Anthony Russo (who helmed the last two Avengers films) were queried about their reunion with Downey Jr. for Avengers: Doomsday, and shared insights on his role preparations.
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who made the last two Avengers movies, discussed their collaboration with Downey Jr. again for Avengers: Doomsday, sharing details about his role preparation.
Joe mentioned that creating a character is an extremely involved procedure for him, as he’s deeply engrossed in the process.
He went on saying, “Downey seems fascinated with creating the history, costume concepts… I believe he’s drawn to complex, multi-layered characters, and he finds a significant chance for development in this role.
At Comic-Con in July, there was a shocking moment when Downey unmasked onstage, revealing that he would portray Doctor Doom. Fans had believed that Downey’s Marvel Cinematic Universe journey ended with Iron Man’s demise in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. However, this turned out not to be the case.
Instead, Downey spoke to the Comic-Con audience, stating, “A new mask, still the job.” Joining him on stage, Joe remarked, “If we’re going to portray Victor Von Doom on screen – he is among the most intricate characters in comics … then we require the world’s finest actor.
Doctor Doom has been portrayed by different actors over the years. Joseph Culp played him in an unreleased version of The Fantastic Four back in 1994. Julian McMahon took on the role in both the 2005 Fantastic Four and its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007. More recently, Toby Kebbell stepped into the role for the 2015 flop, also known as Fantastic Four.
The movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to be released in May 2026. Its sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” is currently scheduled for a May 2027 premiere.
