John Amos' Daughter Shocked To Learn of Actor's Death Through Media

As a long-time movie enthusiast who has witnessed countless stars come and go, it is always heartbreaking to hear about the passing of a beloved actor like John Amos. However, the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s lack of knowledge about her father’s death for 45 days is truly tragic and unfathomable.

On October 1st, it became known worldwide that esteemed actor John Amos had tragically passed away. Typically, when a celebrity dies, their family releases a joint statement honoring them and requesting privacy. However, this wasn’t the case for Amos’ daughter, Shannon, as she shared that she, too, learned of her father’s demise from the media. What makes this situation even more distressing is that the actor from “Good Times” had actually passed away on August 21st, and she remained completely unaware until the announcement was made.

On her Instagram post, Amos expressed that she was left speechless upon receiving the news of her father’s demise. She now finds herself grappling with the realization that it had been 45 days since he passed away before she was informed. She described the situation as a challenging uncertainty instead of a life celebration. However, she is grateful that her father has finally found peace.

“I am without words…Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st.

45 days ago, we were taken aback by the news, just like many of you, and now we’re grappling with a multitude of queries regarding the circumstances surrounding the event.

Despite this being a moment for remembering and rejoicing in his life, we’re finding it tough to handle the turbulent emotions and doubts about his departure. Yet, there’s a sense of tranquility from understanding that my father has now found freedom at last.

We’re truly touched by all the affectionate messages, phone calls, and texts we’ve received. We kindly ask that you keep our family in your good thoughts and prayers. Many thanks for your kindness.

As a devoted fan, I learned of Amos’ passing from his son, K.C. Amos, who faced accusations of elder abuse and financial exploitation by his sister last year – allegations that both Amos senior and K.C. vehemently denied. At 84 years old, the beloved star reportedly died of natural causes in Los Angeles. It seems that the family rift was the reason behind Shannon discovering the news through social media, rather than a personal phone call from her sibling.

Getting his start in 1970 with an appearance on The Bill Cosby Show, Amos rose to prominence thanks to his roles in the 1974 TV series Good Times, and for his portrayal of Kunta Kinte in the TV miniseries Roots, which was based on Alex Haley’s celebrated novel that examines slavery through the eyes of a boy that’s ripped from his family in Africa, and makes his way to America to observe numerous culturally important moments such as the Civil War and emancipation.

Later, he gained prominence for his memorable performances in Eddie Murphy’s “Coming to America” (including its more recent sequel) and “Die Hard 2,” where he played the treacherous Major Grant. Although Kunta Kinte is widely recognized as his most notable role by many, it was his stint on Aaron Sorkin’s “The West Wing” as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace that he is arguably best remembered for, playing the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff over 22 episodes. It goes without saying that Amos has left an enduring legacy in both film and television that will undoubtedly be cherished for years to come. Our thoughts at MovieWeb are with his family during this challenging period, and we hope they find solace and healing in the days ahead.
