John Barrowman Speaks Out on ‘Doctor Who’ Flashing Allegations: ‘I Don’t Regret Anything’

2021 marked the abrupt end of John Barrowman‘s acting career amidst accusations of inappropriate behavior during his time on a series over a decade prior. Known for embodying Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who across Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant’s tenures, as well as in the 2021 Christmas special, Barrowman faced industry-wide exclusion upon being accused of improper conduct, including allegations of “flashing” and unacceptable behavior. In a recent interview, the actor has provided fresh insights into these controversial events, and continues to express no remorse about his actions.

Barrowman was a frequent presence on British television and stages, seamlessly blending acting roles with presenting gigs to earn the affection of numerous households. However, allegations concerning his past actions, such as exposing himself to women and telling off-color jokes while nude on set, ultimately led to his career’s demise. In an interview with Scotland Tonight, Barrowman elaborated:

People were acting absurdly and foolishly, but it’s important to note that they weren’t lured into this predicament through careless reporting.

The interviewer questioned if Barrowman’s actions on the set were beyond merely exposing himself, which is considered a crime when done in public spaces. To this, Barrowman replied:

As a film enthusiast, allow me to clarify a common misconception. Contrary to some speculation, I was not wandering about exposing myself or engaging in such behavior. If a nude scene were indeed required, the director would have likely suggested a return to my trailer. However, I’d politely decline and request they leave me be, saving valuable production time. The set was intended to remain closed during filming, so I’d ask them to trust me and let me stand here instead of going back, changing, and then having to come back again. This way, we can efficiently move forward with the shooting process.

As a passionate cinephile reminiscing about the past, I’d share this: “In such a scenario, if I were to find myself in a nudist role, I’d maintain my composure with an understated gesture – perhaps a subtle jiggle – should an uninvited guest stroll onto set. To me, it wasn’t scandalous; it was simply the norm of a different era.

John Barrowman Doesn’t “Regret” What He Did

Over the past ten years, numerous instances of inappropriate behavior during historical events have been reexamined. These incidents span a wide range of severity, with Barrowman’s fondness for “jiggling” being relatively minor compared to cases of groping, assault, and both physical and psychological abuse that have surfaced following the #MeToo movement.

According to Barrowman, his present professional standing is simply where it lies. Yet, he harbors no regrets over past actions, viewing them merely as amusing stunts that brought laughter to others in the moment. His summary statement was:

“My current industry position is what it is. I have no regrets about my past actions, which at the time, were nothing more than funny antics that made people chuckle.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but chuckle when reflecting upon an instance of silliness that unfolded during the filmmaking process. It wasn’t regret per se, but rather an imprudent decision that seemed amusing at the moment. The entire crew was in stitches, and the laughter on set still echoes fondly in my memory. I don’t dwell on the past, instead choosing to cherish the camaraderie and shared humor of that experience.
