John Carpenter Reveals The Thing Contains “Major Hint” That Solves Ambiguous Ending

Legendary horror filmmaker John Carpenter is sparking excitement among fans once more by fueling speculation over the enigmatic ending of his 1982 sci-fi/horror masterpiece, The Thing (now available from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment), which leaves its conclusion open to interpretation.

At a recent question and answer session at The Academy of Motion Pictures, which was led by Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho (of films such as “Parasite” and “Mickey 17”), Carpenter disclosed that the movie “The Thing” includes a significant clue midway through its duration, resolving the longstanding enigma about whether Character (Keith David) or Counterpart (Kurt Russell) had been taken over by the shape-shifting extraterrestrial.

As a gamer,

“Listen, if you want me to spill the beans on who the Thing really was, you gotta slip some cash into an envelope and mail it to my place. Once that’s taken care of, we can chat about it, no problemo. But let me warn ya, I’ve been sworn to keep a lid on this info, so don’t be surprised if I start acting all mysterious.”

After some chuckles from the crowd, I clarified:

“Alright, alright, I can’t promise anything. The truth is, I’ve taken an oath of silence on this one. So, no matter how much you’d like to know, my lips are sealed.

It’s quite possible that the director, renowned for his dark humor, is merely teasing fans who still dissect every detail of “The Thing” released over four decades ago. However, this is what makes the work so fascinating and timeless – it sparks endless discussions and interpretations. Unfortunately, we may never definitively answer whether the last two survivors were human or not, even if we ask the original cast members.

During The Academy Q&A following a 4K showing of the timeless film, Carpenter remarked, “They were completely clueless. However, they had to act human because the creature was spot-on. It could have been any one of us or someone in the audience, and there was no way to distinguish. So I knew they were clueless, but not me.

In a similar vein, Carpenter maintained the same mysterious stance during his interview with SYFY WIRE some years ago, when we spoke to him over the phone in celebration of The Thing’s 40th anniversary. He shared, “I simply feel it’s a secret that needs to be preserved.” “The gods themselves have bound me to secrecy,” he added.

If you’re considering the gasoline-in-the-whiskey-bottle theory regarding the ending, reconsider your stance. Although Carpenter acknowledges the audience’s creativity, he dismisses most of the theories surrounding the conclusion as baseless. “I admire them,” he stated during our phone call, “but they’re off base.” He continued, “There are some amusing ones. People say, ‘He drank from the bottle, so he must be poisoned.’ Nonsense. I’ve had enough of discussing it.

We couldn’t agree more, John.
