John Cena’s Worst Early Movie ‘The Reunion’ is Streaming on Tubi

John Cena has produced both excellent films and some questionable ones. One of the latter is the 2011 movie The Mechanic, which has recently found a new following on Netflix this month. This film was criticized for being a poor showcase of Cena’s acting abilities, as his portrayal of a complex character fell short of expectations. In the film, Cena plays Sam, a cop suspended from duty who becomes entangled in a dangerous plot while trying to claim the inheritance left by their deceased father. To many viewers, the depth and subtlety were lacking, and it was far from the acting prowess that would later propel Cena into leading roles in major franchise films.

Initially released, “The Reunion” was among John Cena’s initial films and, according to numerous critics, one of several box office flops. Viewing his early roles would leave one astonished by his subsequent success. Among these roles, “The Reunion”, being his fourth time as the lead actor, stood out as the poorest performance. The movie had the potential to establish Cena as a credible candidate following Dwayne Johnson from the wrestling ring to the big screen. However, it inadvertently suggested that he might be better off sticking to his wrestling performances. Oh, how times have evolved!

In “The Reunion,” Nina (Amy Smart) is tasked with reuniting her three brothers – Sam (John Cena), Leo (Ethan Embry), and Douglas (Boyd Holbrook) – following their father’s last wish before his death. As the story unfolds, it’s revealed that Leo learns a con he invested in is under suspicion for kidnapping one of the nation’s wealthiest men. In an attempt to uncover the truth, he persuades his brothers to embark on a risky yet thrilling journey with him.

John Cena’s Career Could Have Ended Before it Really Began

As a passionate cinephile, I must admit that the reception towards “The Reunion” left me disheartened. Across the board, critics seemed to share a collective disappointment, with very few exceptions who saw potential in John Cena’s career within the film industry. The movie currently stands at a staggering 9% on Rotten Tomatoes, a score that speaks volumes about its reception. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter delivered a scathing review that didn’t spare either the star or the studio responsible for this cinematic endeavor. His words were blunt and unsparing, leaving little room for doubt about the film’s shortcomings.

When it comes to WWE Studios, you can always count on them for consistency – all their films featuring their well-known roster of wrestlers have consistently failed both critically and commercially.

Steve Persall from the Tampa Bay Times gave a remarkably similar review of Cena’s performance, stating emphatically that “Cena manages tough scenes with ease, and his deadpan humor isn’t shabby. However, it may be best for him not to abandon his current profession.” The actor who stars in The Peacemaker has significantly improved since then.

In financial terms, the movie “The Reunion” earned only $1.6 million during its theater release. Shortly afterward, it was released on Blu-ray and DVD but struggled to gain traction. However, on the streaming platform Tubi, all bets are off, and Dwayne Johnson’s less-than-spectacular production is currently experiencing unexpected success, over a decade after it was last seen.
