As a passionate admirer of powerful stories that resonate deeply with my own experiences, I am eagerly anticipating the release of “The Piano Lesson” on Netflix. The rich tapestry of family dynamics, cultural heritage, and the struggle for identity depicted in the trailer is strikingly familiar to me as a descendant of enslaved ancestors who fought for their freedom.
In the trailer for Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson,” released on Wednesday, John David Washington and his on-screen sister Danielle Deadwyler find themselves at odds over a cherished family heirloom piano, a dispute that ultimately drives a wedge between them.
“David Washington, portraying Boy Willie, points out to Skylar Smith in the Charles household, ‘That connection you sense? That’s your kinship. That’s your heritage,’ as she gently touches a piano adorned with carvings of family members by an ancestor who was once enslaved.”
In this story, a 130-year-old piano stands between Boy Willie, portrayed by Deadwyler, and his sister Berniece over a matter of inheritance. Boy Willie wishes to sell the antique piece to finance a future for them both, while Berniece aims to preserve it as their last tangible link to their family’s history.
In the heart of it all, Uncle Samuel L. Jackson steps in as a peacemaker among a family struggling to secure their future through ownership of a parcel once worked by their enslaved ancestors – a plot meant to safeguard a past that some wish to erase. The play “The Piano Lesson” is brought to life by Malcolm Washington, making his directorial debut, and co-written by him. Denzel Washington, his father, produces the film alongside Todd Black.
In a director’s note about his film, Malcolm Washington expressed that the struggles portrayed by the character Boy Willie resonated deeply with him, while he identified with Berniece’s perspective and appreciation for the weight of legacy. He emphasized that, like Berniece and Boy Willie, part of his mission is to pay tribute to the lives and legacies of his parents and ancestors. He stated that he hails from a lineage of women and men, some who were freed from chattel slavery, and acknowledged that his existence is due to the choices, sacrifices, and actions of all of them. He stressed that it’s crucial for him to use his life in a meaningful way, as Boy Willie put it, “I’m supposed to build on what they left me.”
The play “The Piano Lesson,” written collaboratively by Virgil Williams, is set to premiere in selected cinemas on November 8th. From November 22nd, it will be available for streaming on Netflix. Jackson and David Washington reprise their roles from a previous Broadway revival that featured Danielle Brooks as well.
The main actors are Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Jerrika Hinton, Gail Bean, and Corey Hawkins.
