As a long-time fan of both John Legend and Taylor Swift, I’ve been thoroughly impressed by their unwavering commitment to using their platforms for good. John’s insights into the challenges Taylor faced when speaking out about politics, particularly from the conservative country music world, highlight the bravery it takes for artists to stand up for what they believe in.
John Legend expressed his admiration for Taylor Swift, stating she’s consistently shown courage by openly expressing her political opinions.
The EGOT winner, who has been vocal about his support for Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, recently told The Independent that he understands it’s more difficult for the pop superstar to speak out given her fanbase.
Taylor often found it challenging to advocate for liberal and progressive artists within the country music scene, which tends to lean more towards conservatism, as Legend pointed out. It was a riskier move for her to express political views compared to myself, and I’ve always admired her courage in taking that risk.
The musician-composer also expressed his agreement with Swift’s endorsement of Harris, stating that he believed her statement was “spot on” when she publicly supported Harris on social media a few days ago. In part, the artist from “Fortnite” wrote: “I’m casting my vote for [Kamala Harris] because she stands up for the issues I consider important and worthy of a fierce advocate.” He further stated that he considers Harris to be a skilled and steady leader, and believes our country would make significant progress if guided by competence rather than turmoil.
As a devoted admirer of Taylor Swift, I’ve always respected her decision to steer clear of politics earlier in her career. However, in the year 2018, she courageously broke that silence by throwing her support behind Democratic candidates Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper during the U.S. midterm elections here in Tennessee, my home state. Come 2020, her endorsement extended to Joe Biden in his bid for presidency.
Regarding Legend, he endorses Harris for presidency as he finds her more fitting, more intelligent, and has a deeper comprehension of the issues faced by American people compared to Republican nominee Donald Trump. In his opinion, Trump is toxic, unqualified, and performed poorly in his role.
In a conversation with The Independent, the artist behind “All of Me” candidly discussed the unfair societal expectations that many women encounter, such as the public criticism faced by his spouse, Chrissy Teigen, regarding her looks, fashion choices, and motherhood.
He expressed his sincere wish that we all improve our interactions with women, stating that it’s evident to him, based on Chrissy’s experiences, that being a woman in the public eye can be more challenging than being a man. He noted that when women run for office or lead companies, they often face criticism that a male counterpart in the same situation would not receive.
