John Lithgow has become renowned for portraying iconic characters such as Winston Churchill in ‘The Crown’, Dick Solomon in ‘3rd Rock From the Sun’, and Arthur Mitchell in ‘Dexter’. While his visage is immediately familiar, his voice is equally distinctive, a trait evident in the 2001 animated film, Shrek. Upon viewing Shrek, many audience members recognized Eddie Murphy as Donkey’s voice, and some swiftly identified Lithgow as the voice behind the malevolent ruler Lord Farquaad. Despite the character making a lasting impact in the film, the actor himself acknowledged that he didn’t anticipate the movie would become such a phenomenon. He believed he was merely lending his voice to a weekend morning cartoon.
Currently, Mark Lithgow is generating buzz due to his role in the upcoming “Harry Potter” TV remake. He will portray Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts. As a result, Lithgow has been the center of attention on the internet and an intriguing subject for Variety’s web series “Know Their Lines.” In this video, Lithgow discusses his career and tries to identify characters based on lines he reads. Interestingly, during the segment where he read Farquaad’s lines, Lithgow admitted that he had a significant misunderstanding about the role he was undertaking.
In simpler terms, “It seemed as casual as a Saturday morning cartoon to me. Nothing special, really. I went over my lines. They showed me a miniature model of this small character named Lord Farquaad, and they displayed numerous animated storyboards. I thought it looked enjoyable. The writers were all present, and they shared what made this character humorous.
It was interesting because I hadn’t encountered Shrek for about four years before that, and they’d occasionally call me back every eight months or so to create more content for it. Each time, I’d think, “Oh, I have to work on this Shrek project again? What is this?
It’s likely that Lithgow needed to record fresh material because changes were made to the main cast, a point he discussed with Variety. Originally, Chris Farley played Shrek, but he unfortunately passed away. This led to Mike Myers being brought in, who then recorded everything. However, it was decided that Myers should use his Scottish accent from his popular SNL sketches, which resulted in various delays in the process.
‘Shrek’ Is Returning in 2026 With ‘Shrek 5’
15 years have passed since we last encountered the ogre in “Shrek Forever After” and various sequels and side stories, but the franchise is set to return in 2026 with “Shrek 5”. This upcoming animated production by DreamWorks will feature the original cast reprising their roles, along with Zendaya joining the team as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia. The release date for “Shrek 5” is scheduled for December 23, 2026.
As a fan, I must admit that the news about a new Shrek movie sparks my curiosity. However, I can’t help but wonder about the film’s tone given the sensitivity surrounding political correctness in today’s entertainment world. Yet, this concern seems minor compared to other issues. After catching a glimpse of the new animation style DreamWorks has chosen for the sequel in a teaser trailer, there was quite an uproar from viewers who weren’t pleased with the redesign of their beloved characters.
