On CBS Sunday Morning, the 42-year-old comedian appeared as a guest to discuss his upcoming Netflix projects in 2025, including “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney.” Throughout the conversation, he divulged personal and professional insights about his life and career. Notably, what catches my attention is not just his witty observations on fame, but rather the evolution of his distinct style, which can be traced back to a past performance. He shared that his unique wardrobe originated from a gig he played in the past.
Since I performed at the Laughing Skull in Atlanta, which is an incredibly fun venue. On this particular occasion, I donned a checked button-down shirt and jeans. Interestingly, there were five opening comedians that night due to the vibrant local scene. As a result, each performer before me opted for a similar attire – a checked shirt and denim jeans. Intriguingly, the audience also mirrored this fashion trend.

In a somewhat playful and possibly old-fashioned manner, allow me to share that in 2011, I will don a suit as I am the evening’s host. Moreover, there’s an air of needing to command attention, even though the words I speak may not hold significant value, so I must project confidence.
Currently, it’s quite challenging to visualize the former student of Bear University participating in anything other than a tailored outfit. Even off stage, he maintains an elegant demeanor, as evident when he was among the numerous stars attending SNL50, and I wouldn’t be taken aback if he wasn’t dressed smartly during a high-profile event at The Comedy Store that same weekend.
John Mulaney humorously hinted at his suit preference possibly being linked to some “unconscious connection” with his father. Yet, he also openly acknowledged that he enjoys the act of dressing up. It’s clear that Mulaney can carry off a formal three-piece attire effortlessly. However, what I’m curious about now is just how much he invests in suits.
Comedians often discuss how certain life events influence them, and it’s fascinating to discover the backstory of John Mulaney’s distinctive performance attire. It seems likely that he will continue to dress in a similar way in future shows.
