As a fan who has grown up with both John Mulaney and Brooke Shields gracing our screens for decades, I must say that their recent exchange on Saturday Night Live was nothing short of delightful. The nostalgia-inducing nod to one of Shields’ iconic Calvin Klein ads was a clever touch that added an extra layer of enjoyment to the already hilarious episode.

Known for his eccentric humor, John Mulaney often uses this style in various forms. This unique wit was evident during his stints on Saturday Night Live, undoubtedly pleasing his supporters. In the 2024 TV schedule, Mulaney served as the host for SNL Season 50, and during his skits, some viewers might have spotted a nod to one of Brooke Shields’ iconic magazine covers through one of his bumper photos. Frankly, I didn’t anticipate that scenario, and it seems that most people didn’t either. The charming conversation between Mulaney and Shields that followed was another unexpected delight.

In the most recent installment of NBC’s long-running comedy show, John Mulaney was featured in various intriguing snapshots. One noteworthy image, however, depicts the comedian wearing a red button-down shirt, blue denim jeans, and black footwear against a white backdrop. This particular photo is reminiscent of Brooke Shields’ iconic Calvin Klein advertisement from 1980, as Mulaney even mimicked the model’s pose for the cameras. All in all, this comical recreation was spot-on! The former Big Mouth star truly nailed the look and stance!

Upon seeing the photo for herself, the Blue Lagoon star took to Instagram to share a side-by-side comparison of the OG pic and SNL’s homage. The former child model also shared a cheeky quip that made me chuckle upon seeing it:

It seems to me that they’re interchangeable… Well, they might as well be your Calvin Kleins, [John Mulaney] 👖😂 [Saturday Night Live] [Calvin Klein]

Way back when Justin Bieber’s Calvin Klein ad grabbed everyone’s attention (or Saturday Night Live jabbed him with a fake one), Brooke Shields had already made waves with her own Calvin Klein promotion. This campaign, featuring a photoshoot and commercials, is now seen as groundbreaking, though it also sparked criticism at the time due to the suggestive nature of her pose, which was perceived as implying something adult-oriented. In reference to that pose, John Mulaney cracked a funny joke about it.

I’m still stuck in that position.

Indeed, hats off to the creator of Mulaney for managing to reach such a prestigious position; it’s not always simple for some people to break free from their current situation. However, I must say, I found it heartwarming that the show chose to pay tribute to the star of Suddenly Susan in such an appreciative manner. To add, this was just one part of a lively episode of Saturday Night Live. Mulaney delivered a humorous monologue, discussing the challenges of raising two young children and the struggles of getting older. In terms of skits, he featured in a special election edition of What’s That Name and New York Assemblyman Harvey Epstein. On top of everything else, Chappell Roan was the musical guest for the night.

In the larger context of the episode, it was a minor detail perhaps, but John Mulaney’s tribute to Brooke Shields really struck a chord with me. I admire her ability to laugh at herself over this nod. As they say, imitation is the purest form of flattery, and I believe that sentiment holds true here. (Here’s hoping other stars who might appear or be impersonated on SNL in the future share the same positive outlook.)

On November 9th, “Saturday Night Live” comes back on air, featuring Bill Burr as the host and Mk.gee as the musical act. Until then, enjoy previous episodes by subscribing to Peacock.
