John Oliver Notes Donald Trump “Turned Christian” in 2020 While Discussing Kamala Harris Race Controversy

As a longtime fan who has witnessed the evolution of political discourse on television, I can’t help but shake my head in disbelief at the audacity and hypocrisy displayed by Donald Trump. It seems that when it suits his purposes, he can conveniently “turn” to any identity or belief system, be it race or religion.

John Oliver is expressing his thoughts on the dispute involving Donald Trump, who sparked a debate over Vice President Kamala Harris‘s ethnicity by claiming he became religious during his second presidential campaign as a Republican.

On Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, the host began by addressing Trump’s remarks made at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago last week. During his speech on a ballroom stage, he commented that Kamala Harris, who is both Jamaican and Indian, had only mentioned her black heritage when it happened to be convenient for her.

Trump stated on July 31th, “She’s someone of Indian descent who was advocating for Indian culture.” He went on to say, “I didn’t realize she was African-American until more recently. It seems she became African-American at some point, and now she wants to be identified as such. I’m not sure, is she Indian or African-American? I respect both, but it appears she isn’t clear herself.”

The 78-year-old’s inquiry about his supposed opponent’s racial background sparked nationwide outrage in Chicago and beyond, as people branded it racist, offensive, and inflammatory. However, Oliver pointed out that Trump had made a comparable move regarding religion while campaigning for reelection, though he falsely accused Harris of doing the same.

In his opening monologue, Oliver had pivoted to discuss the backlash to the Olympic Opening Ceremony in Paris, which, along with other compelling but contentious elements, included a dinner scene with drag queens that some interpreted as a recreation of the Last Supper from the Bible. Appearing on Fox News, Trump had decried the scene’s inclusion at the event, which took place along the Seine River and included performances from Lady Gaga and Celine Dion.

“As for the Olympics coming to the U.S. if I were reelected,” I shared with Laura Ingraham from Fox News, “I wouldn’t be recreating that Last Supper scene as they depicted it the other night. frankly, I found it distasteful. Let me clarify, I’m all about inclusivity and openness – you know this about me. But what they presented was disrespectful.”

In light of the recent uproar, creative director Thomas Jolly clarified that his intention for the performance wasn’t to depict The Last Supper, but rather a celebration of diversity and an homage to the richness of French cuisine.

Later, Oliver remarked on Trump’s shift in religious stance, stating, “It’s rather peculiar to see Trump displaying interest in religion, as I was under the impression that he wasn’t religious until fairly recently, when it seemed he converted to Christianity. It’s almost as if his faith appeared out of nowhere and transformed him into a devout individual.”

Throughout his professional life, Donald Trump has openly declared himself a Presbyterian on several occasions and was officially recognized as such within the Presbyterian community. In October 2020, he disclosed a shift in his religious affiliations.

Trump expressed in a statement to Religious News Services that he now identifies as a non-denominational Christian. He and Melania have been fortunate to tour remarkable churches and interact with esteemed religious leaders worldwide. During the exceptional COVID-19 pandemic, Trump found himself joining numerous virtual church services, aware that millions of fellow Americans did the same.
