As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for legal dramas, I must admit my excitement at the news of John Slattery stepping into the shoes of the iconic Leo F. Drummond for the USA Network’s reboot of ‘The Rainmaker’. With a career spanning from the small screen to the silver one, and even treading the boards on Broadway, Slattery brings a wealth of experience that promises to breathe fresh life into this classic tale.
USA Network has found its star for their reboot of John Grisham’s The Rainmaker.
John Slattery, formerly of “Mad Men,” will headline an as-yet unnamed drama series produced by Lionsgate Television and Blumhouse Television, with author John Grisham also involved. The team behind this project includes Michael Seitzman (“Code Black,” “Intelligence”), Jason Richman (“Stumptown,” “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon”), David Gernert, and Jason Blum as executive producers. Richman and Seitzman have collaborated on writing the pilot script for this show.
Slattery has been cast as Leo F. Drummond, a renowned courtroom titan and senior partner at the influential law firm, Tinley Britt. This is the same firm that stands as formidable opposition to the protagonist of Rainmaker, Rudy Baylor.
Recently graduated from law school, Rudy Baylor finds himself in a courtroom showdown against seasoned attorney Leo Drummond (Slettery) and his former law school sweetheart. As Rudy navigates this complex situation with the help of his boss and her disorganized paralegal, they uncover two intertwined conspiracies surrounding the enigmatic demise of their client’s son.
A new version of “Rainmaker,” initially reported by THR, is being produced directly for a series, marking USA Network’s first independent scripted series since 2020. This network, known for shows like “Suits” and “White Collar,” which have gained renewed popularity on Netflix, was once the most-watched cable network for over a dozen years in a row.
The “Rainmaker” film collection is a result of Lionsgate and Blumhouse joining forces in a multiple-film agreement, where Blumhouse will modernize classic horror films from Lionsgate’s library.
Slattery’s television roles encompass a wide array of programs such as Mrs. America, The Good Fight, 30 Rock, Documentary Now, Arrested Development, Sex and the City, Veep, and K Street. He was honored with four nominations for his portrayal of Roger Sterling on Mad Men, and received a Critics’ Choice nod for his guest appearance in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp. His film credits are equally impressive, featuring titles like Tom McCarthy’s Academy Award-winning Spotlight, Ant Man, Iron Man 2, Flags of Our Fathers, Traffic, and numerous others.
On the iconic Broadway, he has shone in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Rabbit Hole”, a revival of “Betrayal” and most recently, “The Front Page” alongside Nathan Lane, written by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. His directorial skills have been showcased in episodes of “Mad Men” and “Love”, created by Judd Apatow, as well as the films “God’s Pocket” and “Maggie Moore(s)”, featuring Jon Hamm and Tina Fey.
Slattery is repped by Gersh and Sloane Offer Weber and Dern.
