As a movie enthusiast with over four decades of film viewing under my belt, I must say that the upcoming free streaming of “From Paris with Love” is a welcome addition to my watchlist. Despite its less-than-stellar critical reception upon release, the action-packed thriller boasts an all-star cast and the creative minds behind the successful Liam Neeson action franchise “Taken.
Legendary Hollywood actor from “Pulp Fiction” collaborates with “Mission: Impossible” star Jonathan Rhys Meyers, along with director and writer Pierre Morel (known for the Liam Neeson action movie “Taken”) and Luc Besson, for the upcoming action thriller titled “Project XY“. Despite receiving negative reviews upon its initial release, this story about a novice CIA agent teaming up with an experienced spy armed with guns is worth revisiting when it becomes available for free streaming in 2025.
Directed by Pierre Morel, scripted by Adi Hasak, and inspired by a story by Luc Besson, “From Paris with Love” garnered 37% approval from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences were more favorable at 54%. Critics’ consensus states that, despite John Travolta’s entertaining over-the-top performance, the movie is too confused and fragmented to fully satisfy. You can evaluate this “rotten” action thriller when it premieres on January 1. In the meantime, read the official synopsis provided below.
James Reese, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, holds a respectable position as an ambassador’s assistant in France. However, his true passion lies elsewhere – he works covertly for the CIA on the side. His dream is to become a fully-fledged agent, and when he gets assigned to work with Charlie Wax, portrayed by John Travolta, he’s over the moon. But Charlie’s reckless behavior has James longing for his desk job. That is until he discovers that the very individuals they are pursuing pose a threat to him personally, making him realize that Charlie might just be his lifeline.
John Travolta & Pierre Morel Were Hoping From Paris With Love Would Spawn an Action Franchise
Back in 2021, around twelve years ago, John Travolta and director Pierre Morel had high hopes that the movie “From Paris with Love” would initiate a series of action films. As Morel stated during an interview with NJ, the film would offer a different perspective from typical foreign productions. “You won’t find the usual tourist postcard image,” he said. “Every film shot abroad follows the same pattern. Living in Paris, I no longer notice the Eiffel Tower. Paris, like other major cities such as London and New York, has an unsavory side. It’s grimy, it’s not particularly enjoyable.” Travolta was equally enthusiastic about reprising his role and venturing to new locations for multiple sequels.
“Instead of ‘From London With Love,’ it could be ‘From Prague With Love.’ This is among the few movies that I’d look forward to seeing more installments of. Generally, I’m not a fan of sequels, but this one has me intrigued.
After featuring prominently in numerous action films over the recent past, such as “Mob Land” from last year and this year’s “Cash Out”, John Travolta is set to abandon high-octane sequences and instead revisit his dance and vocal talents reminiscent of his days in Grease. His upcoming project, “That’s Amore!”, is a musical romantic comedy where he will be seen once again.
