John Turturro’s Shocking Role in ‘Severance’ Season 2 Mystery Revealed!

[This story contains spoilers from season two, episode two of Severance, “Goodbye, Mrs. Selvig.”]

“Okay. You’re not picking up. I get it. I want you to know, my innie got the message.”

In the recent release of ‘Severance’, one of John Turturro’s brief lines, “Goodbye, Mrs. Selvig,” stands in contrast to the season premiere. Unlike the first episode which exclusively followed the inner selves beyond the overtime contingency plan, the second episode focuses on the outer selves dealing with the consequences of their work counterparts’ actions.

As for Irving, among the MDR Four, we don’t know what happened during those following hours, as he was the only one with a different outcome: his allegiance to Lumon began to wane throughout the first season due to his blossoming affection for Burt (Christopher Walken). After Burt’s compulsory retirement, Irving became fully invested in the innies’ plan to escape into reality. However, unlike his fellow employees, the details of how Innie Irving eventually transitioned back to Outie Irving are still cloaked in secrecy.

We’re curious if it’s Helena or Helly (Britt Lower) on the floor of Lumon this time, but we definitely see Helena dealing with the consequences of her innie’s actions. As for Irving, we find him after his innie drove to Burt’s house to confess his love, and last we saw, he was knocking on Burt’s door. This week’s episode shows us that he’s back at his own place now, so we don’t know what happened between those two moments. We’re eagerly waiting for more details, especially since it seems like Outie Irving already has a plan to take down Lumon.

In the final episode of season one, Innie Irving discovers that his counterpart, or ‘outie,’ has meticulously documented all aspects related to Lumon Corporation, even monitoring several employees. This creates a sense of mystery as we see Irving making a call from a public phone in this week’s episode, which reaches an unidentified person’s voicemail. “My inner self received the message,” we hear him say, leaving us wondering what that message is and who he has informed about it.

Obvious suggestions spring to mind regarding Burt, the woman Irving appears to have feelings for inside the show. The relationship between these two characters remains unclear due to the narrative decision to skip over any scenes showing interactions between them. However, given their affectionate innies, it’s likely that there is some level of fondness or maybe even a secret partnership between Burt and Irving, if not a romantic involvement. Additionally, Burt’s name was on Outie Irving’s list of Lumon employees. Could this imply that the two are working together against the company? This may explain why Burt appears in the episode, observing Irving from a distance.

1. If it’s not Burt, then it could be someone connected to him, such as his former Optics and Design colleague Felicia (Claudia Robinson). She seems to be in charge of O&D now that Burt’s no longer involved at Lumon. If she’s on Irving’s side from the outside, then she might also be a strong ally within the company.

2. Another character from the Lumon universe who we haven’t seen this season but could reappear soon is Reghabi (Karen Aldridge). She was a previous Lumon employee who collaborated with Petey (Yul Vazquez) in the initial stages of season one to become “unsevered” or “reintegrated.” We know that Reghabi has an interest in Mark (Adam Scott), but it’s possible she’s interested in other MDR employees as well. Could Irving be one of them?

Could it be that Ms. Cobel (Patricia Arquette), who departs at the end of this week’s episode, could prove to be an unexpected contender? She has been at odds with Lumon since the series premiere and her current situation only makes her a potential problem for them. If she is already taking action, possibly with Irving as an ally, what might unfold could spell trouble for Lumon. Given their limited interactions in the past, the nature of their relationship remains unclear.

Among the candidates we’re considering, Burt appears to be the standout choice. A seemingly straightforward scenario might involve Irving reaching out to his ex to apologize for the actions of his inner self. However, delving deeper into the intricacies of Severance, the field expands to encompass characters we haven’t met yet. Prior to the season’s start, Apple revealed an impressive roster of new cast members, including John Noble and Gwendoline Christie, who will assume roles yet to be disclosed. Could one of these newcomers be collaborating with Irving against Lumon, and if so, what could their ultimate goal be?
