As a devoted film enthusiast, I find myself reflecting on the two-year anniversary of the cinematic release of “John Wick: Chapter 4.” The film appeared to draw a decisive conclusion to the main series, as evidenced by the poignant scene where Winston and The Bowery King paid their respects at John’s grave. To add to this, Keanu Reeves himself confirmed that “the character’s dead.” However, amidst all this, chatter about “John Wick 5” refuses to die down, leaving me even more perplexed about the fate of our favorite title assassin. The latest word from a Lionsgate executive only adds fuel to the speculation.
Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate’s EVP and Head of Global Products & Experiences, confirmed to Comicbook that the action series will see a fifth installment, titled “John Wick 5”. The upcoming projects include the release of the Ana de Armas-led “Ballerina” in 2025. When asked for additional details about “John Wick 5”, Brown provided no further information at this time.
We’ve mentioned that we’re working on the fifth installment of the John Wick series, but it seems that John Wick might have met his end. Everyone is eagerly anticipating the revelation.
It seems there’s some confusion about John Wick 5, given that Keanu Reeves has stated his character is dead and expressed doubts about reprising the role due to physical limitations. However, it should be noted that while he plays John again in Ballerina, this film occurs between the third and fourth John Wick movies, and it’s uncertain if he participated in the spinoff’s extensive reshoots last fall. In Ballerina, Ana de Armas’ Eve Macarro is the main character, which may have reduced Reeves’ involvement.
Is it possible that Jenefer Brown is aware of negotiations aimed at getting Keanu Reeves to reprise his role as John Wick? That’s plausible, but the question remains: How far should this go? Reeves can’t realistically play this character throughout his entire career, and if the character has supposedly died, wouldn’t reviving him risk spoiling “John Wick: Chapter 4”? I understand the financial incentives behind such choices, and I don’t doubt that Lionsgate would offer a significant amount to Reeves for another appearance. However, this scenario feels reminiscent of the joke Deadpool makes in Deadpool & Wolverine about Fox forcing Hugh Jackman to play Wolverine until he’s 90.
It’s also plausible that John Wick 5 might not follow directly after Chapter 4, but instead be a prelude occurring before the first film. Yet, it’s worth noting that an anime movie is in production detailing the events surrounding John’s Impossible Task. Additionally, I have reservations about casting a new actor to portray John in a live-action movie at this time.
To be honest, I’m finding it hard to comprehend that another John Wick movie, specifically John Wick 5, is actually in the works. I’m eagerly waiting for more information about its production, hoping that it won’t just disappear without a trace. In the meantime, you can stream John Wick: Chapter 4 on Starz, which is available as an add-on to your Hulu subscription.
