As a seasoned movie buff with decades of film-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that Chad Stahelski‘s move from the gritty world of John Wick to the fantastical realms of vampires, aliens, and zombies is an exciting leap. Having cut his teeth on The Matrix and The Crow, Stahelski has shown a knack for blending high-octane action with intricate storytelling.
Renowned action director Chad Stahelski is transitioning from the gritty world of hit-men depicted in John Wick, to a realm filled with vampires, extraterrestrials, and the supernatural undead, for his upcoming project. Stahelski, who helmed and co-created the John Wick franchise (including its subsequent installments), has procured the rights to author Jonathan Maberry’s Joe Ledger book series. Stahelski plans to adapt these 10 novels into a new television series, under the umbrella of his 87Eleven Entertainment production company.
The Joe Ledger series chronicles the adventures of its namesake Baltimore detective, who establishes the enigmatic Department of Military Sciences. Accustomed to street work, Ledger’s life is drastically altered when he confronts chilling plots involving the creation of zombie weapons by terrorists, the exploitation of vampire powers, and the manipulation of alien technology to destabilize nations. According to Deadline, the director has expressed his admiration for Jonathan Maberry’s novels, stating that he is a long-standing fan.
“I absolutely adore the Joe Ledger series! It’s an extraordinary action saga that’s filled with mystery, tension, and fascinating characters. As I delve into each book, I can envision it easily translating to the big screen. I’m thrilled about collaborating with Jonathan on developing this story into a captivating TV series.”
Maberry also expressed enthusiasm about Stahelski transforming his books into a fresh series. The writer looks forward to witnessing Stahelski’s interpretation of his creations, and he has complete confidence in the John Wick director. He stated:
“Chad’s multifaceted career, encompassing roles both on and off-screen, resonates deeply with my personal taste in entertainment. Movies like The Matrix, The Crow, and John Wick are just a few examples that align perfectly with my preferences. Moreover, we share a common passion for martial arts and an insatiable curiosity about pop culture. I can scarcely recall anyone in the Hollywood industry whose thoughts mirror mine so closely. He’s not only a creative visionary but also incredibly enjoyable to be around. This is indeed the essence of ‘Hollywood magic’.”
Chad Stahelski’s Fans Are Still Waiting for John Wick 5
Kicking off his filmmaking journey as a stunt artist, Chad Stahelski utilized his industry insights (in conjunction with another ex-stuntman-turned-director, David Leitch) to birth the John Wick series. What Stahelski initially considered as potentially his last film project, John Wick has grown into a multi-billion dollar franchise, encompassing four films, a prequel series, comic books, and video games based on licensed content. Although many assumed that John Wick: Chapter 4 would mark the end of this franchise, Stahelski has hinted at the possibility of a fifth installment to keep fans intrigued.
After the unveiling of Chapter 4, director Stahelski hinted that the continuation of John Wick 5 hinges on a visit to Japan and a particular bottle of whiskey. Ever since the initial announcement, Stahelski has been contemplating whether to make another installment with Keanu Reeves as the main character. Primarily, he aims to ensure that any future John Wick movies don’t seem like mere money-making ventures. At present, the future of John Wick 5 remains undecided; however, additional tales set in the John Wick universe are on their way.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the upcoming movie in the franchise, titled “Ballerina“, featuring Ana de Armas. This film delves into the intriguing backstory of a character we only got a glimpse of in “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum“. On top of that, a fresh spin-off series is brewing from 87Eleven. The gripping drama “Under the High Table” will carry on right where “Chapter 4” left off, with the ominous and powerful High Table having several vacant seats, largely due to John Wick.
