As a long-time fan of both Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, I can’t help but be excited for their upcoming collaboration in “Joker: Folie À Deux.” Having followed Phoenix’s career since his breakout role in “Walk the Line,” I’ve always been impressed by his ability to fully immerse himself into a character. And with his Oscar-winning performance as Arthur Fleck/The Joker, he truly brought the iconic villain to life in a way that was both chilling and heartbreaking.

Joaquin Phoenix recalls an amusing incident with Lady Gaga during their filming of “Joker: Folie À Deux.” When he sang for the first time on set, she reportedly choked on her coffee in surprise. However, Phoenix adds that Gaga was extremely supportive and motivating when it came to his efforts to convey Arthur Fleck/the Joker’s emotions through music. It might be hard for fans to imagine Phoenix dancing like Gene Kelly in a comic book production, but what will be, will be.

In simpler terms, the new Joker movie released in 2019 might not have been how Rodgers and Hammerstein would have created a musical, but the upcoming sequel is expected to bring together Gotham’s most infamous villain, the Joker, and Harley Quinn in an exciting collaboration. In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Phoenix discussed his experience of collaborating with Lady Gaga, specifically when it came to singing their dialogue.

I can relate to the speaker’s experience of performing for the first time and feeling self-conscious about it. Just like her, I remember my first performance vividly, with all its nerves and uncertainty. The audience’s reaction, or in this case, Gaga’s response, can make a huge difference in how we perceive ourselves as performers. Her words of encouragement, “Go with what you feel, it’s fine,” were like a breath of fresh air for me, making the experience both uncomfortable and exhilarating at the same time. It takes courage to put yourself out there and share your talents with others, but the validation and support from those around us can make all the difference.

Although Phoenix hasn’t received any GRAMMY awards, like Lady Gaga has, he did gain an Oscar (for Best Actor) in 2019 for his role as Mr. Arthur Fleck in “Joker.” In the same interview, Phoenix went on to say:

Arthur grew up with his mother’s tunes playing in the background from the radio. He isn’t a trained singer, nor does he aim for a polished sound. Instead, he sings like an ordinary person who suddenly breaks into song while taking a shower.

Don’t Expect to Find Clown Prince of Crime in Joker 2

Enthusiasts are looking forward to the debut of Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn in Todd Phillips’ upcoming movie “Joker: Folie À Deux.” However, it’s important for fans to note that Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix who gained recognition for his role in the 2019 “Joker,” will not be linked or promoted with the Joker’s well-known moniker, the Clown Prince of Crime. Phillips made this clear during a recent interview.

“Arthur isn’t a criminal mastermind as portrayed in the past. Instead, he’s unintentionally become a symbol for something else. He’s paying for mistakes from the first film yet finally finding what he always wanted – love. Despite being influenced by various forces, Arthur has remained true to himself. Therefore, we aimed to depict him as honestly and authentically as possible.”

The excitement for “Joker: Folie À Deux” is palpable with Lady Gaga’s genuine portrayal of Harley Quinn and Phoenix repeating his award-winning performance from “Joker” in 2019. The bar has been set high, making it intriguing to see if the upcoming “Joker 2” can match the brilliance displayed by Phillips in his direction five years prior.

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for both music and storytelling, I can’t help but be excited about the prospect of a “Joker” sequel. The 2020 Oscars held a special place in my heart when Hildur Guðnadóttir took home the award for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score) for her exceptional work on “Joker.” This accolade not only validated the film’s artistic merit but also set a high bar for any future musical elements in the anticipated sequel.

Joker: Folie À Deux
opens in theaters on October 4.
