Joker: Folie Deux Reactions Call the DC Sequel Bland, Boring & Uninspired

As a seasoned movie-goer and critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I approach every film with a sense of anticipation, especially when it comes to highly anticipated sequels like “Joker: Folie à Deux”. Having witnessed the meteoric rise of Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Arthur Fleck in the 2019 masterpiece, I was eager to see how Todd Phillips would weave another tale around this captivating character.

With the impending release of the DC sequel, social media has been buzzing since its premiere in Los Angeles, and it seems like it might dampen your enthusiasm. Directed by Todd Phillips for a second time, featuring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, also known as Joker, and Lady Gaga as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, or Harley Quinn, the sequel continues the narrative of the 2019 Oscar-winning original, focusing on Arthur’s journey to Arkham Asylum.

Regrettably, it appears that Phillips and Phoenix decided against keeping Joker as a standalone film, which many had anticipated. Critic and Twitter user @Lulamaybelle feels that the joke may be on us now, as Joker 2 seems to lack depth and excitement, being described as “undercooked” and “as dull as can be.

It seems the joke’s on us this time. #JokerFolieADeux looks visually appealing, yet it’s contrasted with an unpleasant, cruel attitude that mistakenly thinks it’s rebellious. I enjoy deconstructed musicals, but this one feels unfinished and dull. Unfortunately, Lady Gaga’s talent is not fully utilized here.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but echo the sentiments of @Cinemaniac94 regarding the allegations that “Joker: Folie à Deux” might be on the dull side – something no movie ever wants to be accused of. From his perspective, it seems as though the creators were at a loss when it came to devising a compelling sequel for this iconic character.

I found #JokerFolieADeux quite lackluster. The musical was uninteresting, the narrative was uninspired, and Harley, or should I say, LEE Quinn, was poorly utilized. It was also a rather average storyline. As a fan of the original, it seemed they had no clear vision for the sequel, which left me feeling disappointed.

It’s fortunate that many find the follow-up quite watchable, mainly due to the stellar lead performances and a handful of thrilling scenes, as noted by user @colebrax.

I appreciate Todd Phillips’ bold choice to craft an R-rated musical around psychopath characters in ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’. Although I can’t guarantee it will be a completely fulfilling experience, the film is definitely worth watching for some electrifying scenes where Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix breathe new life into the tired superhero genre, making it feel thrilling and exhilarating once more.

Will Joker: Folie à Deux Find the Same Oscar Success as the First Movie?

In spite of the negative feedback, there were some who became captivated by the concept of Joker: Folie à Deux, and believe that, similar to its precursor (which also faced mixed reactions), it has potential for Oscar recognition. As @rickyvalero_ expresses it:

I was utterly astonished after watching #JokerFolieADeux. Todd Phillips skillfully crafted a heartfelt and melodic romance that harmonizes beautifully with music. Joaquin Phoenix excelled once more, but Lady Gaga truly shines as a cinematic talent. She’s undeniably deserving of an Oscar nod. I can’t recommend it enough!

In essence, the release of Joker 2 has sparked curiosity among fans of the initial film, as they ponder “why did all this happen?” as pointed out by @BryanSudfield.

I’m glad to be a fan of ‘Joker’, but I have to admit that I wasn’t fond of ‘JOKER: Folie À Deux’. Despite its impressive filmmaking and strong performances from the leads, it fell flat for me as a musical. By the end, I found myself wondering what the purpose behind it all was.
