Joker’s Joaquin Phoenix Recalls Encouraging Lady Gaga To ‘Sing Poorly’ In The Sequel

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with a soft spot for gritty, character-driven tales, I’m genuinely intrigued by the upcoming sequel to Todd Phillips’ Joker, titled Folie à Deux. The prospect of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga sharing the screen in a musical setting has piqued my curiosity, given their respective acting chops and unique artistic personas.

In contrast to many films set in shared universes, some comic book movies can be enjoyed independently. One such example is Todd Phillips’ film, Joker, currently streaming with a Max subscription. Its follow-up is the next highly anticipated DC movie scheduled for theater release. Interestingly, Joaquin Phoenix has discussed persuading Lady Gaga to deliver an intentionally poor singing performance in this upcoming production.

What we know about Joker: Folie à Deux is limited, but fans are definitely intrigued by the use of musical numbers in the movie. Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are leading the Joker 2 cast, and will seemingly get a few duets throughout its runtime. The pair recently spoke to Vogue, where Oscar-winning Phoenix confirmed that he tries to get the pop star/actress to sing bad. As he put it:

I prompted her to sing without using her distinctive vibrato, and she seemed uncomfortable without it at first. However, when she focused less on technical aspects, her character’s unique voice emerged.

Points were made. While Lady Gaga has a stunning singing voice, it wouldn’t really make sense for her character Harleen Quinzel to be so gifted in the grimy halls of Arkham Asylum. So instead she had to change her technique, including not using her signature vibrato.

Eager to contribute to the discussion, Lady Gaga shared insights about altering her unique vocal style for the musical tracks of “Folie à Deux.” In her own words:

I put a lot of effort into that project, but it seems like I might have to unlearn some techniques. To clarify, the film isn’t about music or singers like Ally Maine in A Star Is Born.

Given that singing has been confirmed for the sequel, there’s been a lot of discussion about whether or not Joker 2 is actually a musical. Both Todd Phillips and Lady Gaga have stated that it isn’t, but the use of music in the film seems reminiscent of a traditional musical. It will certainly be intriguing to find out how this plays out when the movie premieres in October.

In the previews for the upcoming film “Joker: Folie à Deux“, some of the songs that will be featured throughout the sequel have already been hinted at. These include well-known tunes like “For Once In My Life”, “What the World Needs Now Is Love”, and “When You’re Smiling.” Given the limited amount of footage released so far, it’s likely that there’s much more music to be revealed in the final product.

On October 4th, the secrets of “Joker: Folie à Deux” will be unveiled when it hits theaters. To make sure you don’t miss it, take a look at the upcoming movie releases for 2025 and plan your cinema trips accordingly in the new year.
