A stage adaptation of the 1975 film “Dog Day Afternoon,” produced by Warner Bros.’ theatrical division, is making its way to Broadway. The lead roles will be played by Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who are known for their work in “The Bear.
In the spring of 2026, Stephen Adly Guirgis’s adaptation of a film about a botched bank heist is set to premiere on Broadway. The production is being directed by Rupert Goold, under Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I, along with my gaming buddy, will be stepping into the shoes of Sonny Amato and Sal DeSilva respectively in an upcoming game adaptation of the iconic film, “Dog Day Afternoon.” This gripping tale, set in the sweltering heat of summer 1972 New York City, follows a daring bank heist gone awry in Brooklyn that captured the nation’s attention. Fast forward to 1975, Al Pacino and John Cazale graced our screens as the unforgettable protagonists in Sidney Lumet’s Academy Award-winning hostage drama.
Jon Bernthal boasts a theatrical career spanning over thirty shows, such as Martyna Majok’s “Ironbound” and Rogue Machine Theatre’s “Small Engine Repair.” At present, he shares the screen with Ben Affleck in “The Accountant 2,” and with Rami Malek in the CIA-themed suspense film “The Amateur.
As a thespian, Moss-Bachrach has made appearances on television in shows such as HBO’s “Girls”, Netflix’s “The Punisher” and Disney+’s “Andor”. On stage, he has been part of the 2011 production of Chekhov’s “Three Sisters,” acting alongside Jessica Hecht, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Peter Sarsgaard. In 2015, he was also involved in a stage performance of John Pollono’s “Lost Girls”, sharing the limelight with Piper Perabo.
Goold, primarily known for his work in live theater, currently serves as the artistic director at the Almeida Theatre, a position he previously held with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Adly Guirgis’ play titled “Between Riverside and Crazy” was awarded the 2015 Pulitzer Prize.
