Director Christopher Nolan has enlisted another Marvel star for his upcoming take on Homer’s epic poem, “The Odyssey.” Instead of focusing on nuclear conflicts, this new project transports us to Ancient Greece and retells the timeless story using IMAX cameras. The anticipated film, titled “The Odyssey,” which has been veiled in secrecy so far, is scheduled for release in 2026. Production is slated to commence towards the end of this year with a star-studded cast that includes an actor from the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again.
As reported by Deadline, Jon Bernthal, known for his role as The Punisher, is set to join the stellar cast of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film titled The Odyssey. His character in the movie has yet to be revealed, but Bernthal will be working alongside stars such as Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. Since The Odyssey involves various mythical creatures like the Cyclops and Minotaur, it’s possible that Bernthal could appear in a transformed role. However, details about each actor’s character, including Tom Holland and Matt Damon, are still under wraps.
If you haven’t read Homer’s “The Odyssey” before, it tells the story of Greek hero Odysseus who embarks on a decade-long voyage home after the Trojan War. Throughout his journey, he faces many dangerous situations and meets mythical creatures due to Poseidon, the sea god, wanting to punish him. Translating this classic epic poem into a movie might be Christopher Nolan’s most challenging project yet, as compressing its grandeur and length into a single feature film could be quite tricky.
So… Who Is Playing the Lead Hero of ‘The Odyssey’?
One intriguing aspect of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming production is the mystery surrounding who will portray Odysseus. Recent speculations suggest that Tom Holland, famous for his role in Spider-Man, might play the part of a man aged between 35 and 45, although some think Matt Damon could be the chosen one. However, it’s equally possible that both actors could embody the classic hero, with each possibly taking on Odysseus at different stages of his life. Regardless, there are still numerous roles left to cast for this epic odyssey, such as Poseidon and Athena, which many anticipate will be played by Zendaya.
Without a doubt, Nolan’s interpretation of “The Odyssey” isn’t going to be the first instance where Homer’s work has graced the silver screen. In recent memory, Ralph Fiennes portrayed an aged version of the ancient hero in “The Return,” which focuses on the latter part of the epic. If reports are true that Holland and Damon will play the lead character, Nolan’s adaptation is expected to delve into the entire original storyline, encompassing Odysseus growing 20 years older by the time he returns home. Fiennes delivered a remarkable performance embodying the iconic character, so there are high expectations for the actor chosen to play him in Nolan’s movie.
