Jon Bernthal Reveals Frank’s Secret Trick That Makes Him the Ultimate Punisher

It appears that the world has either found stability or experienced quite the opposite, given that Jon Bernthal‘s beloved character, Frank Castle, is officially re-entering our lives through the upcoming series, Daredevil: Born Again. This fan-favorite vigilante has made his long-awaited comeback to the 2025 TV lineup, marking his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a main character. Previously declining an offer to reprise his role before the creative overhaul of the Disney+ series, Bernthal was eager to infuse the character with his unique perspective. He also highlighted a significant distinction between Frank Castle and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock.

On the surface, Frank and Matt appear to be distinct individuals, yet they conceal a number of shared traits through their vengeance fueled by costumes. Although their main objectives can sometimes coincide, Bernthal explained that the two characters’ mentalities diverge significantly, even when both are heading towards the same destination. And although one may not always wish to emulate the other, this is what he told Entertainment Weekly:

Despite looking different and having similar goals, Frank and Matt have very distinct personalities. Even when they’re going after the same thing, their ways of thinking are quite different. Bernthal talked about this with Entertainment Weeky.

There’s a hint of the essence of Frank within us all, which I firmly believe. Just as the saying goes, ‘One misfortune can make any one of us just like me.’ In my opinion, Frank identifies aspects of himself in Matt, and Matt recognizes the same reflection in himself. There’s an underlying joy in this mutual understanding.

Despite Charlie Cox’s character portraying a well-rounded champion of justice, I think we can all agree that Matt is not entirely innocent when it comes to his actions being influenced by his emotional turmoil. This becomes particularly evident in response to tragic events, like Foggy being assassinated before his eyes. It seems as though Frank takes pleasure in serving as a subtly sinister influence on the golden boy.

However, this is where Bernthal highlights the main distinction between the two characters, despite the appearance that Matt has entirely transformed into the Punisher. In his own words:

Additionally, Frank finds no interest in the ambiguous or complex. He doesn’t have patience for puzzling matters or dwelling on details. To Frank, Matt’s indecisive nature and constant changes are contrary to his personal truth, which he is confident about. For Frank, there’s a certain satisfaction in knowing more than Matt about these matters, and he enjoys teasing him about it.

In the storyline of “Daredevil: Born Again,” the character White Tiger experienced a terrible twist. However, I believe this dark turn might be setting the stage for another superhero to emerge.

As a movie critic, I find myself pondering over Matt’s character evolution in this film. Unlike the swift and impulsive Frank, Matt is not one to abandon his principles overnight. His strict moral compass and deep-rooted religious beliefs make him pause before taking action, as he carefully weighs the potential consequences for both his physical self and spiritual soul. This thoughtful approach makes it highly improbable that Matt would suddenly decide to retaliate against his adversaries in an instant.

On the contrary, Frank might destroy an entire field merely to eliminate a solitary mouse, and this action would be taken impulsively without any prior thought or foresight. If the objective is to kill the mouse, Frank will certainly succeed, but Matt might harbor doubts that prevent him from acting.

In addition, as Bernthal states, Matt is conscious of the difference between them and finds it bothersome, whereas Frank does not seem to mind, instead choosing to follow his impulses without hesitation – which often involves injuring people in a brutal manner, such as breaking their kneecaps or splitting elbows. Frank clearly avoids dealing with flexible joints.

During the fourth episode of “Daredevil: Born Again,” titled “Sic Semper Systema,” Frank and Matt’s somewhat similar beliefs emerged as the Man Without Fear grilled his former adversary-turned-ally about the bullet casing with a skull mark, discovered near Ayala’s body. It was delightful to witness their interaction once more, even though they didn’t immediately set out to attack villains’ faces at that moment.

It would be delightful if Jon Bernthal and his team could incorporate Charlie Cox’s character into the upcoming Marvel Special Presentation for The Punisher, which was announced in February. However, it seems unlikely given that all these actors are quite busy at the moment, as Season 2 of ‘Born Again’ is currently being filmed.
