Jon Hamm Is Back and “It’s Very, Very Cool”

Jon Hamm Is Back and “It’s Very, Very Cool”

As a huge fan of Jon Hamm‘s acting abilities, today’s Emmy nominations have left me absolutely thrilled and ecstatic! It’s not every day that an actor manages to secure two Emmy nods for two different projects in one year. Jon Hamm is truly back in the limelight, and he deserves every bit of recognition he’s receiving.

Jon Hamm is not simply back in the conversation, he’s a double Emmy nominee.

Today, the TV Academy honored his acting skills in two different shows. In “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+, he portrayed the tech billionaire Paul Marks, reminiscent of Elon Musk, for the entire season. Simultaneously, on FX’s “Fargo,” he brought the villainous Sheriff Roy Tillman, a MAGA Marlboro Man, to life.

Hamm has been nominated for Emmys multiple times before this morning, with a total of 16 nominations for shows like “Mad Men,” “30 Rock,” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” He won his first Emmy in 2015 for the final season of “Mad Men.” However, Hamm mentions that receiving a nomination in today’s vast TV landscape feels unique.

On his way to a voiceover engagement in New York, where he’s now shooting the upcoming Apple TV+ show “Your Friends and Neighbors” for Hamm, his phone rang with a call from THR.

Let’s start with congratulations.

Well, thank you very much. It’s very, very cool.

It seems that the lengthy and gloomy periods I spent filming in Fargo, as well as the frequent trips between the two sets, have been worth it.

Something like that. (Laughs.)

I’m thrilled to hear you sharing your excitement about being part of Fargo and The Morning Show again. That was an amazing feeling before the Emmy nominations came in. But now, with these prestigious recognitions, it feels even more exhilarating!

I can definitely relate to the fact that playing characters in today’s TV landscape feels different compared to the past. Fifteen or even ten years ago, shows like “Mad Men” ruled the airwaves, but the TV scene has drastically changed since then. With the rise of streaming services, a show like “Baby Reindeer” wouldn’t have stood a chance back in the day. And I’m glad it’s here now! Playing these unique characters and being recognized for my work brings me immense joy. Plus, the frequent flyer miles I’ve accumulated over the years are finally paying off too. It’s an exciting time to be part of this evolving industry.

There were strong showings for both of these projects this morning. I know this all just happened, but are the text chains already fired up?

I understand that the person in this text is expressing their excitement about a change in schedule for an event they used to attend in the morning, now happening around noon. They share that they haven’t had a chance to fully engage with the news of nominations for their colleagues due to their busy schedule, but they are thrilled for everyone who was recognized and appreciate the diversity of nominees.

You’ve been here before. Do you prepare speeches or is that sacrilegious?

I don’t. I haven’t had the occasion to do many speeches, so…

You’ve had many occasions to prepare them…

As a gamer, I’ve had the opportunity to prepare for various challenges, but the thought of going through the mental turmoil and anxiety that comes with it is not something I relish. It’s an uneasy feeling, one that makes me want to just jump into the action and see how things unfold. If something good happens to me, I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it and deal with any consequences, like forgetting to thank someone or handling unexpected setbacks.

Since you’re now in the “Emmy vet” category, what advice do you have for first time nominees?

I’ve been in the entertainment industry for years now, and let me tell you, being nominated for an award is a truly humbling experience. It’s easy to get jaded and think that it’s just another cliche, but deep down, I still remember my first nomination like it was yesterday. The feeling of recognition from your peers is indescribable, a validation of all the hard work and dedication put into your craft.

Previously, you expressed optimism that your schedules would permit your participation in The Morning Show’s fourth season, which is now being filmed. Are you still confident about this possibility?

I’d don’t know if I’m allowed to say, so I’ll just say I’m feeling positive.

I understand your busy schedule with Taylor Sheridan’s Landman and your upcoming Apple show. Let’s postpone our discussion until next year when you might have more time for it.

To be continued. Thank you.
