Jonathan Majors Breaks Silence on Harrowing Past: Can He Reclaim His Career?

It’s been more than a year since Jonathan Majors, best known for his role as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was charged with assault and harassment against his ex-girlfriend, British dancer Grace Jabbari. Since then, his life has taken a drastic turn, from a rising Hollywood star to being fired by Marvel and his entertainment agency, as well as going through a 52-week domestic violence intervention program. In more recent news, however, Majors has broken his silence on his own harrowing experiences, particularly during his childhood.

Prior to his arrest in March 2023, Jonathan Majors was on track to possibly reach the pinnacle of his career, with Creed III becoming a box office hit and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania casting him as Kang the Conqueror, the apparent heir to Marvel’s most iconic villain, Thanos. However, things changed when a jury determined Majors guilty of domestic violence, sparking divided reactions from people around the world.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Majors spoke out for the first time since his trial, disclosing his childhood trauma and experiences with sexual abuse that led him to become depressed as an adult. While he is not allowed to comment directly on Jabbari’s allegations, Majors points out how his past incidents shaped his present life. He shared:

“At some point there has to be accountability for writing your own story. Am I going to fall into that narrative of falling apart, of self-destruction? Have a struggle, blame the world. Have a struggle, hate yourself. Have a struggle, deny everything. None of those narratives is beneficial. Have a struggle, learn, metabolize, grow. My pop is a very beautiful man, very gentle, but had some qualities that were not complementary to family life. He was the best dad until he wasn’t. And when he wasn’t, he was gone.

I dealt with sexual abuse from both men and women from the time I was 9. From people who are supposed to look after you, in the absence of a father. I was f**d up. I’m like, ‘It’s not even an issue, mom. I just want you to know. And now we can all get busy and continue to connect and grow and learn from it, because it’s something that was in our family. There are no excuses, but by getting help, you begin to understand things about yourself. I never had a moment where I went, ‘I want to be a movie star. But I had the moment that was like, ‘I’m going to act for the rest of my life, and I’m going to be the best I can be at this. I’m going to throw everything into it,’ and I have.”

What This Means for Majors’ Career Moving Forward

Although some might read Majors’ latest confessions as an attempt to garner sympathy for his prior actions, childhood abuse is not something to be dismissed. It’s clear the actor is determined to his craft—whether in major roles like Kang the Conqueror in the MCU or in independent projects such as Martin Villeneuve’s upcoming horror thriller Merciless. Despite his legal struggles, many industry veterans continue to cheer for his comeback.

he will continue acting in movies, as not everyone in Hollywood wants to see an end to his career.
