As a design aficionado with a penchant for both technology and fashion, I find myself utterly captivated by Jony Ive’s latest creation – the LoveFrom, Moncler jacket. Having grown up with Apple devices that bore the imprint of his genius, it’s fascinating to witness him venturing into the realm of clothing design.
As a devoted admirer, it’s thrilling to share the news about Jony Ive, the iconic Apple designer who breathed life into the aesthetics of the iPod, iPhone, and many more innovations, now stepping into an entirely new realm – fashion! In partnership with Moncler, he recently unveiled his debut clothing design. Named “LoveFrom, Moncler”, this collaboration is a nod to Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom. The star attraction of this collection is a versatile 3-in-1 jacket, designed meticulously to offer an enjoyable and adaptable user experience.
This down vest with long sleeves forms the foundation of a three-piece system. The shell options available are a chore coat, a parka, and a hooded poncho. Each component is meticulously crafted from a single continuous piece of recycled nylon without any seams. The colors presented in the previews – peach pink, baby blue, and canary yellow – have a gentle and recognizable feel, reminiscent of the pastel hues introduced in iOS 7’s interface overhaul by Jony Ive in 2013.
The distinctive nature of this item isn’t solely due to its versatility; instead, it’s the special “Duo” buttons that create seamless shifts between layers. These buttons offer an adaptable experience for the wearer, allowing them to adjust the number of layers based on their preference. The Duo button is a collaborative invention by Moncler and Ive, ensuring that each additional layer fits securely over the base. Moreover, every outer part features metal eyelets all around, which magnetically connect to the buttons at matching positions on the initial layer.
At the heart of the design lies the satisfying tactile sensation offered by the soft click of every button. This delightful clicking sound wasn’t happenstance; the team behind it went through a painstaking 18-month research phase to find the perfect metal alloy, which produces that precise auditory satisfaction.
In 1996, I assumed the role of design leader at Apple, setting foundations for the streamlined design ethos that came to symbolize the Apple brand. Some of my earlier works, such as the iBook G3 released in 1999 and the iMac from 1998, are key milestones in Y2K design, a style that has remained relevant in popular culture for quite some time. Following my departure from Apple, I founded LoveFrom, a studio that catered to a wide array of clients, including Linn, an innovator in audio equipment, and even the Royal Family.
On September 24, the Moncler jacket from LoveFrom is expected to hit the shelves at Moncler retail stores. It should become available online not long afterwards.
