Jordan Peele’s Get Out Rockets Up Streaming Charts 8 Years After Release

Jordan Peele’s debut movie, “Get Out,” is rapidly climbing the streaming rankings eight years after its initial theater release. Known for his Emmy-winning work on the Comedy Central sketch show Key and Peele, Peele secured his first Academy Award for writing the screenplay of this psychological horror-mystery-thriller. In addition to writing, Peele also directed and produced the 2017 film.

Beginning July 6th, the movie “Get Out” has been steadily climbing up HBO’s Top 10 Movies list and is currently ranked at No. 7. Starring in this film are Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Allison Williams (“M3GAN 2.0”), Emmy-winning actor Bradley Whitford (“The West Wing”), Catherine Keener, Caleb Landry Jones, Marcus Henderson, Betty Gabriel, Stephen Root, Lil Rel Howery, and Richard Herd.

Things take a Mysterious and Racist Turn in Get Out

In this film, Kaluuya portrays Chris Washington, a young African-American man who travels to rural New York to meet his white girlfriend’s family, Rose Armitage (Williams). Initially, the family appears welcoming, if a bit uncomfortable, but their true nature is eventually revealed as malicious and racially prejudiced when Chris uncovers the hidden depths of the Armitage family’s bigotry.

Initially released on a budget of just $4.5 million, the movie titled “Get Out” became an unprecedented box office sensation, amassing over $255 million globally. This success catapulted Jordan Peele into a formidable presence in the horror genre. Following “Get Out,” Peele penned and directed the 2019 horror flick “Us,” featuring Lupita Nyong’o and Elisabeth Moss. Subsequently, he wrote and directed another film titled “Nope” that also starred Daniel Kaluuya along with Keke Palmer. Both these movies were commercially successful in their respective rights, with “Us” earning a staggering $256 million worldwide, while “Nope” garnered $171.2 million at the box office.

Peele’s Thoughts on Get Out

In an interview back in 2017, Peele reflected on the film and its racial undertones. “With the power of my creativity, there were countless ways this movie could have gone astray,” he started. “I worried, ‘Might white people shy away from the movie due to fear of being portrayed as villains alongside a predominantly black audience? What if Black viewers avoid it because they don’t want to sit near a white person during scenes where a black character is suffering?’ These thoughts crossed my mind,” he added.

Peele stated, “I believe people find it difficult to discuss race when we keep things hidden – thoughts, emotions, anxieties. They require an outlet. I think the film ‘Get Out’ serves as a means to contemplate, debate, and confront racial issues, but it does so in a more comfortable manner because it’s entertaining.

Get Out is streaming on HBO Max.
