As a lifelong gamer and cinephile, I can confidently assert that if it wasn’t for Thursday Night Football, I would have missed out on one of the best comedies of 2024: “Brothers”. This masterpiece from Etan Cohen (the genius behind “Tropic Thunder” and “Idiocracy”) has been largely overshadowed, which is a shame because it’s a gem waiting to be discovered.
Without Thursday Night Football, I likely wouldn’t have discovered my favorite comedy from 2024. It turned out to be a short commercial during the game that announced a new comedy movie featuring Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin on Amazon Prime Video. I decided to watch it after the match ended, only to find out that “Brothers” was barely getting any attention.
A film by Etan Cohen, known for “Tropic Thunder” and “Idiocracy”, is now available for streaming and I’m eager to share it with comedy enthusiasts who might not be aware of its existence. This movie revolves around two brothers on a mission to transform their lives using some ancient jewels they unexpectedly find, and I believe it’s a must-watch for anyone looking for a good laugh!
This Movie Thrives On Two Actors Known For Their Dramatic Roles Crushing It In The Comedy Genre
It’s surprising to me that I was taken aback by James Brolin and Peter Dinklage doing comedy, given their past roles. For instance, Dinklage portrayed the grumpy author Miles Finch in one of the most delightful Christmas movies, Elf. Also, it’s hard to forget that with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine on Disney+, Brolin played Cable in Deadpool 2, demonstrating his comedic skills even in action-packed roles.
Here are a couple of instances, but they’ve also exhibited their humorous side in various films and on Saturday Night Live. It’s quite amusing to witness these two actors being outrageous, especially considering Peter Dinklage’s Emmy-winning portrayal of Tyrion Lannister, a character we usually associate with seriousness. Similarly, Brolin often brings to mind his roles in No Country for Old Men or Dune before I think of his comedic performances.
In Brothers, it’s simple to overlook their previous flamboyant characters due to the comedic and serious shifts between the two male leads. Dinklage impressively portrays the oily Jady, politely declining a proposition for intimate acts from an elderly cellmate and later reuniting with his brother Moke. Brolin delivers a convincing performance as the somewhat slow-witted brother, trying to conceal his criminal past from his fresh family circle.
The exceptional quality of the film lies in its ability to convincingly portray the brotherly bond between the characters throughout the movie. Their acting is spot-on, with Jady embodying the role of the mischievous one who inherits his mother’s knack for grand plans and quick money schemes, while Moke balances this with his steadfast love for family as he strives to establish a respectable reputation for himself. The chemistry between these two brothers is captivating, but the film offers much more in terms of its overall appeal.
The Supporting Cast Is Loaded With Stellar Talent
In this film, Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage carry a significant load of the acting, but they’re not alone; they’re ably supported by an exceptional ensemble cast. Glenn Close plays their questionable mother, Cath, who is pivotal in this grand jewel heist comedy. Her portrayal blends elements from her characters in both “101 Dalmatians” and “Hillbilly Elegy,” and it’s nothing short of magnificent.
In simpler terms, Brendan Fraser significantly enhances the humor in this film with his comical portrayal of a character who is consistently loud and energetic. His role in “Brothers” brought back memories of how amusing he can be, and I believe no other actor could have pulled off his Officer Farful as well as he did, contributing to some of the most humorous scenes in the movie.
Among many notable scenes, these two stand out, yet there are more to be spotlighted. Taylour Paige delivers an outstanding performance as the devoted housewife, and I must admit, Marisa Tomei’s portrayal of her unconventional character in Spider-Man leaves a lasting impression, making it difficult for me not to recall her wild persona whenever I watch the film again. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal any more details, but let me tell you that this role is a striking departure from the motherly characters she has portrayed before.
Ricky Stanicky Was My Favorite Comedy Of 2024, This Tops It
In my opinion, Prime Video takes the crown for the top comedy movies of 2024. The first time I watched “Ricky Stanicky,” I was left speechless by its hilarity. John Cena’s portrayal of Britney Spears in drag was so amusing that I felt nothing else released that year could possibly match its comedic value. If you haven’t seen it yet, let TopMob’s glowing review of “Ricky Stanicky” convince you to give it a watch.
I gave Ricky Stanicky a 4.5 rating, higher than our standard review, and let me tell you, Brothers outshines it in nearly every aspect one could imagine. However, this doesn’t mean that Ricky Stanicky is a poor film; instead, Brothers stands out as the exceptional comedy of 2024 in my opinion. With very little time left in the year, I’m confident in saying that no other upcoming comedy slated for release will impress me as much.
What I find frustrating is that the film “Brothers” didn’t make it to theaters, considering I believe it was worthy of a good theater run. Here’s hoping that with wider viewership and positive word of mouth, it develops a cult following on streaming platforms. I doubt there will be a sequel, but if enough people watch it, perhaps it will draw more attention as we approach the end of the year.
As a dedicated gamer speaking to fellow enthusiasts, if you haven’t already realized, watching “Brothers” is as simple as activating your Amazon Prime Video account and diving in. Don’t get it twisted with the Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire movie – trust me, that one isn’t a laugh riot! The two films might share a title, but trust me, they couldn’t be more distinct from each other. I can’t overstate this enough.
