Josh Brolin’s Father James Brolin Once Made the Family Eat His Pet Pigs

As a die-hard fan of Josh Brolin, I find his journey in Hollywood to be nothing short of inspiring. Despite being the son of the legendary James Brolin, Josh has proven that he’s more than just a “nepo baby.” His career trajectory, filled with diverse roles and unconventional choices, is a testament to his talent and resilience.

Josh Brolin, throughout his career, has taken part in some unusual films. This could be due to his unconventional upbringing, which Josh himself recently disclosed wasn’t always glamorous, despite being the son of renowned actor James Brolin. Besides standout performances in films like No Country for Old Men, The Goonies, and Dune, Brolin has also ventured into some peculiar roles, such as the debated remake of Spike Lee’s Oldboy, Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror, and the largely forgotten Jonah Hex. Although Josh is the son of James Brolin, who is widely recognized for his TV roles in M.D. and Hotel. Despite their appearances as a powerful Hollywood father-and-son duo, their relationship might have experienced strains at times.

Josh Brolin remarked on a recent In Depth podcast episode, expressing his feelings with, “Did he share the pig story with you? What an odd fellow,” instead of using explicit language. James had previously appeared on the show and narrated a tale about their family’s pigs during Josh’s childhood to host Graham Bensinger. Josh then added, “Gosh darn it,” before providing more details about the situation.

Raising Oink and Snort, my pig companions, was an unusual chapter in my life. One evening, as we sat down for a meal, I find it hard to believe I was once part of their lives too – it certainly doesn’t paint me in the best light.

During dinner, his dad playfully asked, “‘Can you guess what’s for dinner?'” When young Josh Brolin responded, his father revealed, “‘It could be either ‘Oink’ or ‘Snort.’ Yep, that’s right. That’s what we’re having tonight. We’re the ones who butchered it.'” This vivid memory stayed with him, leading him to question, “Why would you tell a child something like that?” He went on to express:

It seems illogical. What could possibly prompt you to share that information with a child, almost as if it were something to be celebrated? Perhaps you intended to make an impression?

Josh Brolin Wasn’t Exactly a Nepo Baby

As a movie enthusiast, I recently revisited the captivating performance of Josh Brolin, son to the renowned James Brolin and casting director Jane Cameron Agee. The term “nepo baby” has been tossed around in Hollywood circles, referring to actors who seemingly benefitted from their family’s connections. However, when it comes to Josh Brolin, it appears his story may deviate from that narrative.

Currently, Josh Brolin, aged 56, and his father, who is 84, still have a stormy relationship. In describing his father, Brolin likened him to a “stop sign on the freeway.” He elaborated, “My dad’s an interesting character; he’s incredibly friendly, but there’s a stop sign. It’s like, before you can get onto the freeway and drive at 65 or 75 miles per hour, there’s a red light.” He continued, “You’re eager to go. You’re prepared to hop on the freeway and speed ahead, but the light never turns green. So you’re stuck there like this, waiting, and thinking, ‘It looks like I can go.’ But the stoplight just keeps staying permanently red.
