Josh Hartnett Reveals How Toxic Fandom Made Him Walk Away From Hollywood

As a longtime fan of Josh Hartnett‘s acting career, I can’t help but be in awe of his resilience and determination to prioritize his well-being over Hollywood fame. In the late ’90s and early 2000s, Hartnett was on the brink of superstardom with roles in blockbuster films like “Halloween H20: 20 Years Later,” “The Faculty,” and “Pearl Harbor.” However, as he shared in a recent interview, toxic fan behavior and even incidents of stalking forced him to take a step back from the limelight.

Josh Harnett, who gained popularity as a teen idol in the late ’90s but then stepped back from Hollywood, has revealed why he turned down significant film roles when he was on the brink of becoming a leading movie star. In an interview with Deadline, the “Oppenheimer” actor spoke about the negative fan behavior and even instances of stalking that led him to make this decision. One of the most notable opportunities he missed out on was working with Christopher Nolan in the “Dark Knight” trilogy, as well as being considered for the role of Superman. Instead, Hartnett chose to retreat from the limelight to deal with other matters and avoid a potentially dangerous stalking situation.

During that period, the level of interest and intrusion from people towards me was almost unsettling. Several unsettling incidents occurred, such as unexpected visitors at my home, individuals stalking me, and a man appearing at one of my premieres brandishing a gun, insisting he was my father. This man was eventually imprisoned. The events that transpired were numerous and bizarre. It was a peculiar time in my life, and I had no intention of becoming the center of unwanted attention.

Recently, Hartnett didn’t secure the part of Batman in Nolan’s production, but he has since landed a role in the 2023 film “Oppenheimer.” In this project, he portrays nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence. This new opportunity has given Hartnett renewed optimism about his career in Hollywood.

I’ve come to realize that working with someone like Chris, whom I had the chance to collaborate with but didn’t, was a valuable learning experience. As for your concern about tailoring your career to personal interests, I no longer believe that should be the top priority. Instead, it’s essential to build trusting relationships with people.

I wasn’t eager to let my work consume my entire existence back then. There was a trend for people to dedicate themselves entirely, but I’ve seen the consequences – some were lost in it all. I didn’t desire that fate for myself.

Luckily, Hartnett’s fortunes are expected to shift in 2024. He stars in M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller, “Trap,” set for release soon. In the movie, Hartnett portrays Cooper, a father whose daughter’s concert turns out to be a police trap intended to apprehend a serial killer. However, an intriguing twist: Cooper is the supposed killer himself. But keep in mind, this being a Shyamalan production, there’ll probably be an unexpected ending to this tale. Any guesses?

Over the past few years, Garrett Harnett has featured in films such as “Wrath of Man” and “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre,” both directed by Guy Ritchie and co-starring Jason Statham. In addition, he made a cameo in the highly praised third installment of “The Bear.” Before these appearances, Harnett’s most notable roles were during the late 1990s and early 2000s when he graced our screens in movies like “Halloween H20: 20 Years Later,” “The Faculty,” “Black Hawk Down,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Wicker Park,” and the chilling “30 Days of Night.” Here’s to hoping that Harnett’s second chance at fame is a more enjoyable experience for him.
