As a huge fan of Josh Hartnett‘s acting skills, I couldn’t help but chuckle at his recent story about Matt Damon’s less-than-helpful advice during the filming of “Oppenheimer.” Hartnett played nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning film, and he gained approximately 30 pounds for the role.
Matt Damon‘s advice for Josh Hartnett while filming Oppenheimer came a little too late.
The actor portraying Ernest Lawrence, a nuclear physicist in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed movie, dropped by “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” and relayed some supposedly unproductive acting tips from Damon during the visit.
“He shared valuable suggestions with me, one of which seemed counterproductive: He cautioned against the weight I had already put on for my acting part. I had gained approximately 30 pounds for the role, and he remarked, ‘You won’t be able to lose that again, buddy.'”
Hartnett mentioned that the actor playing the role of Lt. General Leslie Groves in “Oppenheimer,” referred to as the “Air star,” follows a specific guideline in his acting career: He avoids putting on excess weight past the age of forty.
The “Paradise Lost” actor explained, “You’ll continuously struggle to lose weight for the rest of your life, only to regain it. Your body will persistently fight against you, making it a never-ending cycle.” He repeatedly shared this perspective during the filming process.
Hartnett jokingly responded, “Thank you, Matt, for sharing that with me now. Unfortunately, I’ve already acquired it.” Now, I no longer consume anything.
Damon is experienced with undergoing significant weight changes for acting roles. For the part of a drug-addicted Gulf War veteran in “Courage Under Fire” (1996), he lost 40-50 pounds in approximately 100 days. Conversely, to prepare for his role in “The Informant!” (2009), he put on weight.
Due to the rapid weight loss required for his role in “Courage Under Fire,” the actor has shared publicly about the health complications he experienced during that period.
Damon admitted going overboard, leading him to fall sick and vowing not to repeat the experience due to its intensity. Simultaneously, his condition enhanced his acting. He became physically unwell with symptoms like dizziness and hot flashes. Initially, he kept quiet about it, fearing he might be seriously ill.
