Josh Hartnett Reveals the Awkward Advice Matt Damon Gave Him While Filming Oppenheimer

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I have seen countless actors transition from the silver screen to the gaming world, but none quite like Josh Hartnett. His journey, much like the characters he plays, is filled with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat.

In his conversation with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, actor Josh Hartnett shared that Oscar winner Matt Damon provides valuable guidance, although his timing could use some improvement. Prior to working together in Oppenheimer, Damon cautioned Hartnett, who was then 44, against adding weight for a film role. Sadly, Hartnett had already gained the extra pounds before receiving the warning from Damon.

1. At the age of 53, Damon strictly avoids gaining weight for his roles after turning 40. He even advised Hartnett against bulking up to portray Ernest Lawrence in the Christopher Nolan movie. However, the harm had been inflicted before Hartnett shared his weight gain news with Damon. Upon hearing this, Damon was straightforward in expressing his displeasure.

For the part, I put on approximately 30 extra pounds, and he remarked, “You’ll never be able to lose that again, pal.”

1. In this production, Damon portrayed Lt. Gen Leslie Groves, who collaborated with Oppenheimer on the Manhattan Project, which culminated in the creation of the atomic bomb. Simultaneously, Hartnett took on the role of Ernest Lawrence, a renowned physicist who shared a professional bond with Oppenheimer at UC Berkeley and was even awarded the Nobel Prize in 1939. To authentically embody Lawrence’s physical appearance, Hartnett intentionally gained weight. However, Damon jokingly expressed remorse over this decision. Hartnett added that Damon was persistently challenging him about his imprudent weight gain.

1. “He essentially said, ‘You’ll constantly struggle to lose weight, but your body will always want to regain it. You’ll oscillate between sizes, attempting to shed the pounds only for them to return. It’s a cycle you can’t escape.’ I responded, ‘Thanks, Matt. I appreciate the heads-up, but I’ve already put on the weight you’re referring to.'”

Luckily, his dedication to bringing the character to life paid off, as his portrayal in “Oppenheimer” next to Cillian Murphy’s Robert Oppenheimer was first-rate, and the movie turned out to be a huge success critically, culturally, and financially. The film received seven Oscar wins, among them for Best Picture, Best Director (Nolan), and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.).

From Christopher Nolan to M. Night Shyamalan, Josh Harnett Is Back in the Spotlight

Following his collaboration with Christopher Nolan, actor Hartnett is once again drawing attention and is set to headline the upcoming thriller “Trap” directed by M. Night Shyamalan. In this film, Hartnett portrays a serial killer attempting to elude capture within a bustling music concert. This role marks a shift from Hartnett’s customary characters, and initial feedback on the movie describes it as an enjoyable journey reminiscent of Shyamalan’s early works such as “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable.” The film also features Ariel Donoghue and Saleka Shyamalan, and it hits theaters on August 2.

In 1998, Josh Hartnett gained prominence through his appearances in “Halloween H20: 20 Years Later” and “The Faculty.” His fame soared with the lead role he played in Michael Bay’s WWII film “Pearl Harbor,” released in 2001. Notable film credits of his include “Black Hawk Down,” “Sin City,” “Lucky Number Slevin,” and “30 Days of Night.” Hartnett has also graced our TV screens with performances in “Penny Dreadful,” “Black Mirror,” and “The Bear.”

Oppenheimer is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. On the other hand, Trap is set to make its US debut on August 2, 2024. You can preview a sneak peek of it in the trailer provided below.
