1990s-centric ensemble cast graces Robert Rodriguez’s cult film “The Faculty,” an ’90s classic sci-fi horror movie that manages to be entertaining despite its lack of true scare factors. However, this engaging high school twist on pod-people creatures is best appreciated as a standalone piece, without any follow-ups or additional narrative development. Naturally, 27 years later, a Hollywood remake is slated to join the growing roster of upcoming horror movies.
As a cinephile eagerly anticipating the upcoming reboot, let me share some insights about the anticipated remake of “The Faculty”. However, before I delve deeper, allow me to express my primary concern regarding this seemingly redundant reimagining of the original film.
Before discussing the specifics of the new version of “The Faculty”, let’s first tackle why I find a remake of what is already a well-loved classic somewhat questionable.
What We Know About The Faculty Remake So Far
- Director: TBA
- Screenwriter: Drew Hancock (Companion)
- Cast: TBA
- Studio: Miramax
- Production Company: BoulderLight (Barbarian, Weapons)
- Producer: Robert Rodriguez
Clearly, we’re just getting started with the new Faculty project, but it’s Drew Hancock who is driving the creative momentum. He’s currently a sought-after talent in the genre community due to his work on the popular horror film Companion, featuring Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher. Interestingly, Hancock’s background is primarily in comedy, having written for Adult Swim’s Mr. Pickles, MTV’s Faking It, Spike’s Blue Mountain State, and creating the go90 streaming show My Dead Ex.
According to Variety, Robert Rodriguez is the key link between the original film and its remake, apart from Miramax. Interestingly, Rodriguez has agreed to produce the remake, but what intrigues me more is how he would reimagine his own movie, rather than another director taking over. However, it’s not so much the directing aspect that concerns me with this project.
I Hope The Faculty Doesn’t Utilize A.I. To Modernize Its Story
As a movie enthusiast, particularly one who loves horror flicks, it’s hard not to notice the surge of A.I.-themed movies lately. From the anticipated sequel and adult version of M3GAN (SOULM8TE) to AfrAId and more, it seems like Hollywood executives are rubbing their hands together in glee, brainstorming ways to incorporate artificial intelligence into as many remakes as they can. Personally, I hope I never have to witness a self-driving bus take the place of the original Speed movie.
Regardless, the involvement of Drew Hancock in scripting leads me to suspect that instead of an alien parasite threat, which caused misery for Herrington High School students and staff as depicted in The Faculty, we might see a completely technological antagonist. This shift could be due to the narrative of Companion, which paints a terrifying picture of advanced technology, given that it likely played a significant role in Miramax executives deciding to employ him.
It’s not that I believe Hancock lacks the ability to create an entirely fresh perspective on The Faculty, one that deviates significantly from AI mobile classrooms and the like. However, it wouldn’t be unexpected if he were constrained by certain guidelines that somehow reference Companion’s narrative in some form. I’m not implying he should be limited in this manner, but it’s possible that such constraints might exist.
It’s puzzling to me how the author might pull this off, but if Jordana Brewster were cast as an android high school teacher, it wouldn’t be hard to convince students to follow her commands, even if it involves implanting chips in their heads that transform them into mindless creatures. Fingers crossed she’s part of a group of former cast members joining the new series.
Robert Rodriguez’s classic film, The Faculty, continues to shine as one of his finest works. At present, it stands out as a top pick among the movies available for streaming on Pluto TV. Keep an eye out for news about the upcoming remake – remember to install your new brain chip!
