Reflecting on the upcoming 2025 TV lineup, it’s been more than a decade since we bid adieu to Ted Mosby and his crew – including the heartrending passing of Tracy Mosby/McConnell, played by Cristin Miloti last year. As the actor who brought Ted’s hopeless romantic side to life, Josh Radnor, revisits the series, I can’t help but join him in his emotional outburst at a crucial point in the show.
Josh Radnor and co-creator Craig Thomas talked about the pilot episode of their sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” on the podcast titled “How We Made Your Mother” (available on YouTube). During this conversation, Radnor admitted that he was uncertain where his character straddled the line between heroic figure and lovable romantic fool. He also mentioned that he initially adored the strong connection between him and Robin, but it wasn’t until his premature confession that he understood his character’s true position, stating:
In another words, I found myself deeply invested in their romantic interaction during the scene where he donned his suit, and it added an undeniable charm to the show – a charm suitable for primetime television. The chemistry between them was palpable, and their gazes carried a genuine sensuality… You could say they had “bedroom eyes.”
When he admitted his feelings for Robin, I was taken aback, much like Marshall, Lily, and Barney would have been with the same surprise. My initial reaction was similar to Barney’s – “What!?” It was an unexpected and inopportune declaration of love that set off the entire series. While it was essential for the plot development, I couldn’t help but feel disheartened by his rash decision-making. In a way, I felt a pang of disappointment, as if to say, “This pilot is working well… But if you’re upset with him for this misstep…” However, it turned out that this misstep was crucial to keep the series moving forward.
In the pilot episode, the moment after Robin and Ted’s date had a significant impact on the entire series, as the alum from Liberal Arts expressed something quite different from their usual interactions. This exchange was particularly memorable and, at the time, was quite unique compared to other TV shows. It stirred up much conversation among viewers when it first aired, and there were certainly some blunders made by Mosby afterward. However, that initial sentiment had a ripple effect throughout the series, ultimately securing its place as one of the most enjoyable sitcoms for binge-watching (and it’s available to stream with a Netflix subscription).
Despite the fact that the scene from 2005 was incredibly emotional for all of us, I can’t help but feel that Josh Radnor’s reaction was particularly raw and intense. As he revisited the episode, it seemed like he openly criticized Ted during his viewing. And to add to this, Thomas corroborated this account.
It seems like you may have sent a message that evening saying something along the lines of “I’m shouting at Ted on TV with Jordana.

How I Met Your Mother: What’s The Cast Up To Now?
I’m still hurt by Ted Mosby’s feelings, as a fan, because they didn’t sit right with me. But if you’ve watched the entire series, you know that he eventually ends up with Robin, following Tracy’s tragic death. However, their relationship after her passing is a topic that continues to divide fans. Overall, Ted Mosby remains a character who straddles the line between hero and lovable fool.
Reflecting on Josh Radnor’s work, particularly his portrayal of Ted, inspires me to delve deeper into my own self-discovery. However, I must admit that if I were to rewatch the series, there might be times when I find myself expressing exasperation over some of Ted’s actions, and even echoing Barney’s famous quips in response.
