The renowned American artist, Josh Smith, collaborated with Case Studyo on a recently unveiled sculpture titled “Even in the Deepest Despair, a Spark of Hope Still Resides Within Us“.
Originating from New York City, artist Smith gained recognition in the 2000s with his vivid paintings that intertwined his name as both a personal touch and a thematic basis, blurring the lines between creator and creation. Over the last two decades, however, Smith has shifted towards abstraction, manipulating common symbols such as fish, skeletons, and trees in a manner that highlights and honors the process of painting, rather than striving for conventional perfection.
In Smith’s recent work, he depicts the Grim Reaper in white porcelain, adorned with intricate black details spelling his name. This sculpture serves as a somber symbol of our common mortality, yet it invites viewers to appreciate the beauty hidden within ordinary experiences, despite life’s unpredictable challenges. “Embrace the reaper,” Smith suggests.
Only 25 pieces, along with four artist proofs, of the artwork titled “IN THE DARKEST DESPAIR A SPARK OF HOPE LIES WITHIN US” are in circulation. Each piece measures approximately 11 x 5.9 x 3.9 inches and is individually signed and numbered. They are packaged in a screen-printed collectors box and can be purchased through Case Studyo.
