Joshua Jackson Debuts as ‘Doctor Odyssey’ in Trailer for Ryan Murphy ABC Series

As a seasoned gamer of both the small and big screens, I must say that the latest announcement about Joshua Jackson joining Ryan Murphy’s ABC series, “Doctor Odyssey,” has me more than a little excited! With his impressive track record on shows like Dawson’s Creek, Fringe, Fatal Attraction, and Dr. Death, not to mention his return to network TV since 2013, it’s safe to say that this man knows how to deliver a compelling performance.

Joshua Jackson has boarded the Odyssey.

In his comeback to television broadcasting, Jackson portrays Dr. Max Bankman in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming ABC series, “Doctor Odyssey“, set to debut on September 26th. The plot details of the series have been mostly secretive, but a trailer and brief description unveil what is next from this acclaimed TV creator.

Known for its fast-paced narrative, Doctor Odyssey revolves around Max (Jackson), the latest addition to the medical staff of a lavish ocean liner. The crew here works tirelessly yet enjoys life to the fullest. With every hand on deck, Max and his compact yet robust team confront extraordinary medical emergencies and personal challenges, all while being cut off from land.

The trailer (below) introduces Max’s on-board medical team played by Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale and Don Johnson, who are joined by star-studded guest stars Shania Twain, John Stamos, Gina Gershon, Kelsea Ballerini, Chord Overstreet, Cheyenne Jackson, Laura Harrier, Stephanie Suganami and Justin Jedlica.

Doctor Odyssey marks Jackson’s return to network television since his last series, Fringe, ended in 2013. Following his breakthrough role in Dawson’s Creek during the late 90s, he recently appeared in Paramount+’s Fatal Attraction and the first season of Peacock’s anthology series, Dr. Death.

Since the premiere of 911: Lone Star on Fox in early 2020, Murphy’s production company hasn’t produced a new TV show for broadcast until now. In addition to that flagship, 911, currently airing on ABC, Murphy is debuting the newest installment of his American Story franchise, American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez, over at FX. He also has an anthology series called Monsters for Netflix, featuring The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and a horror series titled Grotesquerie for FX in the works as well.

At the 2024 Emmys, Jackson expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that Ryan Murphy’s series is a captivating, gleaming work of fantasy. He’s only watched the first two episodes, but he finds the cast’s camaraderie exceptional – they’re as harmonious as a well-oiled machine. The storylines move swiftly, and Murphy’s dialogues sparkle with energy. The scenarios are extravagant and exaggerated, while the sets and costumes are stunning. In essence, it’s an engaging, visually appealing hour-long escape.

He also commended Murphy for his “extraordinary imagination” and skill in navigating between the two contrasting aspects of his work. It turns out that “Doctor Odyssey” fits into the latter category. The speaker admires how Murphy possesses a deep, dark side as well as a lighter, humorous, occasionally musical personality. Remarkably, he excels at both with an equal degree of brilliance.

The series “Doctor Odyssey” is jointly produced by 20th Television and Ryan Murphy Television, with Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken serving as writers and executive producers. Jackson and Johnson are additional executive producers. Paris Barclay directs and also serves as an executive producer. Eric Paquette, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, and Nissa Diederich are also listed as executive producers.
