Following NBC’s cancellation of its final drama in uncertainty, it appears that ABC could be edging towards permanently cancelling Doctor Odyssey after one season and actor Joshua Jackson’s recent brief statement regarding the show’s future. Despite turbulent waters ahead, this doesn’t necessarily mean the primetime soap will sink before securing a second season.
The Bad News
On Monday, June 30th, the acting options for the show “Doctor Odyssey” are set to expire as per Deadline’s report, and it appears that these options won’t be renewed. This doesn’t necessarily mean that ABC has officially canceled the series, but rather that the actors will now have the freedom to explore other opportunities since no decision regarding their underwater adventure show has been made for some time.
The team has apparently shifted to other assignments, but given that Doctor Odyssey is a Ryan Murphy production (confirmed with a crossover with 9-1-1 in the spring), crew members frequently transition between Murphy’s projects. It’s worth mentioning that ABC has commissioned 9-1-1: Nashville for the fall season, starring Chris O’Donnell as the lead. This new series, set in Nashville, will occupy the 9 p.m. ET time slot on ABC Thursdays, previously held by Doctor Odyssey, sandwiched between 9-1-1 and Grey’s Anatomy.
It’s regrettable, considering John Oliver’s recent remarks on “Sexy ER On A Boat,” and the fans’ anticipation, that the situation isn’t dire. There’s a possibility the show could return, but it might take some time.
Why There’s Hope For Doctor Odyssey
The same Deadline report which disclosed the end of cast contracts, also mentions that Doctor Odyssey hasn’t been officially axed yet. Ryan Murphy appears to be mulling over potential creative paths for the show’s next destination. Fresh agreements with actors would need to be struck if there is a continuation; however, the prospect of new deals seems more appealing than the confirmation of no deals.
It appears that Dr. Odyssey is popular among Hulu viewers who stream the show, making it intriguing if the series doesn’t continue on ABC but instead becomes an original streaming production, similar to how NBC handled Law & Order: Organized Crime. At present, ABC has opted against presenting a full lineup of Ryan Murphy action, as they are only keeping Grey’s Anatomy in its traditional Thursday night slot, with two 9-1-1 shows and Dr. Odyssey not returning to fill the other time slots.
At present, you can carry on enjoying the first season of “Doctor Odyssey” on Hulu. While fans who felt disappointed by the Season 1 finale may still be in that state following the announcement that the cast is free to explore other opportunities, there’s no need for fans to jump ship yet! The fate of “Doctor Odyssey” remains uncertain, so for now, we bid farewell to the cast, but fans can continue sailing with their favorite series.
