Joy Reid Says Black Women “Are Living at a Time of Theft” at Essence Awards Days After MSNBC Dismissal

At the 2025 Essence Women in Hollywood Awards, Joy Reid expressed to the audience that Black women are currently experiencing a period where their accomplishments and contributions are being unjustly taken away or underappreciated.

Three days following MSNBC’s sudden reshuffling which led to the cancellation of her show, “The ReidOut”, Reid expressed her thoughts at a luncheon. She emphasized to the audience on Thursday that the rich history of Black women could potentially be erased.

She went on to say that our ability to engage in democracy is at risk. We might be deprived of the contributions from federal employees, a group that significantly contributes to the services we frequently utilize.

To an enthusiastic audience, Reid additionally referenced “those of us serving in the U.S. military” who are being advised that “our history can’t be taught at military academies, or our images can’t be displayed on their websites,” claiming this is under the guise of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), suggesting that such principles should not be questioned as they are indeed positive aspects.

Reid continued discussing the importance of diversity and inclusion strategies, commenting that these DEI policies, which have faced numerous attacks from the Trump administration through various executive orders, are beneficial for both corporations and the organizations we work with, describing them as a valuable asset.

She stated, “As this nation grows increasingly multicultural, regardless of individual preferences, it’s essential to reflect that diversity when selling toys. Consequently, including a Black mermaid in your product line would be beneficial since many young Black and brown children yearn to identify with the characters they play with.

In her continued toast, she expressed: “Equity matters significantly since Black women enter every setting already needing to excel, being more knowledgeable, stronger, and well-prepared than most. And indeed, we achieve this. Thus, equity isn’t solely for our benefit; it enhances the companies and organizations we work with. An inclusive environment is not an option, but a fact of life as we move towards a more diverse nation.

Reid stated that America’s diversification can be halted by attempting to change democracy. He also emphasized that Black Americans have been central figures in movements to thwart such threats throughout history. “Black Americans, who have endured hardships such as loss, scarcity, slavery, and Jim Crow… we hold a firm belief in this nation’s rights, freedoms, and Constitution, which historically did not extend to us.

On Thursday, the 2025 Essence Women in Hollywood Awards were held at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, where Cynthia Erivo, Teyana Taylor, Marla Gibbs, and Raamla Mohamed were celebrated for their achievements.
