Jubilee Turns 2: Did you know Wamiqa Gabbi was rejected for Niloufer’s role in first audition? Here’s how she bagged the part due to her ‘stupid videos’

2025 marks the 2-year anniversary of Vikramaditya Motwane’s series Jubilee, which aired on April 7th. In this period drama, Wamiqa Gabbi portrayed Niloufer, a role that garnered her considerable recognition and admiration. Interestingly, many may not know that she initially didn’t get the part during her first audition. However, her “unconventional videos” on social media ultimately secured her the role.

In a 2023 interview with India Today Digital, Wamiqa Gabbi shared that she had previously met director Vikramaditya Motwane prior to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. During their audition process, she aimed to be poised and deliver her best performance. The actress expressed her conviction, saying that the director was seeking more than just grace from her character; he wanted everything.

The first time I encountered Vikramaditya, our initial meeting and audition went fairly well. However, it was a single encounter. After that, a pandemic occurred, and he started using Instagram to follow me. He watched my amusing videos and discovered my unique humor. He recognized the character of Niloufer in me. This is how I received another call, without having to audition again, as I was already ‘locked-in’.

During the conversation, Wamiqa was asked if she resembles her Niloufer character’s sassiness from the show. In response, the actress pointed out that her character is a free-spirited woman who is often judged as being ‘immoral’ in society. She also shared that her character has a “brothel” in Lucknow and people do not expect her to be a ‘good girl’.

The actress from Jab We Met shared that her family is loving, helpful, and perceptive, never giving her a sense of being confined. She believes this liberating feeling comes from them, which she personally identifies with.

Under the guidance of director Vikramaditya Motwane, this series starred Aparshakti Khurana, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Aditi Rao Hydari, Nandish Singh Sandhu, Shweta Basu Prasad, Madhu Sachdeva, and Sidhant Gupta, among others, in key roles. The series unfolds in the pre-independence period and takes place within the movie industry, with all 10 episodes now available for streaming on Prime Video.
