Julia Louis-Dreyfus Talks the Timely Newfound Popularity of Veep

As a long-time fan of brilliant political satire and dark comedy, I can’t help but feel elated at the recent surge in popularity for the groundbreaking series “Veep.” Five years since its finale, it’s been an absolute rollercoaster to witness this resurgence. The increase in viewership by a staggering 353% (as reported by Luminate) is no mere coincidence; it’s a reflection of the current political climate in the United States.

Approximately five years after Veep’s conclusion, there’s been a surprising surge in interest for the political satire series. Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who starred as Selina Meyer, is thrilled by this turn of events. The viewership has soared by an impressive 353% (as reported by Luminate), but it’s not due to nostalgia like Suits’ resurgence on Netflix. Instead, it’s the current US political climate that’s fueling this boost in viewers. Interestingly enough, the surge in views came right after US President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nominee. The similarities between Selina Meyer’s character and Harris’ political journey are quite striking.

In a chat with Entertainment Weekly at this year’s Comic-Con, Selina Meyer actor Julia Louis-Dreyfus spoke about the renewed interest in her former show “Veep.”

It’s been quite an exhilarating experience to observe. The number of viewers has skyrocketed an astounding 350%. I’m thrilled and elated that so many people are enjoying it. I have no doubt that Kamala Harris is equally enthused by this success.

In an interview with Variety a year ago, Julia Louis-Dreyfus was told by Harris (presumably a friend named Harris) and her spouse that they adore the show ‘Veep’, and that it’s actually more similar to Washington D.C. than people might prefer to acknowledge. For seven seasons from 2012-2019, Louis-Dreyfus played Selina Meyer in the widely praised comedy ‘Veep’. She won six consecutive Emmy Awards, along with other honors, for her performance. The HBO program depicts Louis-Dreyfus’ character as she discovers that being Vice President of the United States is quite different from what she imagined and everything she was ever warned about.

Veep & Kamala Harris Comparisons Are a Double-Edged Sword

Recently, Armando Iannucci, the mastermind behind “Veep,” clarified that despite some parallels between Selina Meyer and the current vice president (and potential democratic nominee), it’s important to note that the fictional character, who frequently struggles with her responsibilities, was not modeled after Kamala Harris.

On various social media platforms, there are numerous comparisons drawn between Selina Meyer and Kamala Harris. These comparisons can be either favorable or unfavorable based on one’s political leanings. Enthusiasts of the idea anticipate a historic first female U.S. President (with Selina Meyer assuming office following her bid for presidency after the incumbent steps down unexpectedly). However, some critics view Selina’s past errors as potential warning signs. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Veep executive producer and showrunner David Mandel discussed the varying opinions expressed online regarding this topic.

1st, it’s delightful to find out that Kamala appears to be a fan of ‘Veep’. I wholeheartedly agree. It’s wonderful that she possesses a good sense of humor, considering the stark contrast with those who lack this trait. In my opinion, having someone who can laugh at themselves seems more suitable for the White House compared to someone who cannot find humor in themselves and finds dark humor like Hannibal Lecter references amusing.

As someone who has spent years advocating for women in politics, it saddens and infuriates me to see the way Kamala Harris is being treated by certain individuals online. While I appreciate the enthusiasm surrounding Selina Meyer’s character from the show “Veep,” it becomes problematic when people use memes featuring her as a way to belittle and insult Vice President Harris, particularly given that both are women in high-profile political roles.
