The movie is based on Sigrid Nunez’s 2020 novel titled “What Are You Going Through“. It revolves around two characters, Ingrid (played by Moore) and Martha (portrayed by Swinton), who were once close friends but had lost touch over the years. They reconnect, and as they delve into their shared past, it becomes apparent that Martha, struggling with terminal cervical cancer, intends to end her life with grace. She confides in Ingrid, asking her to be present in the next room when she takes a pill for euthanasia.

On Monday evening’s debut, they made an appearance after previously attending the movie’s press conference in the afternoon. Moore, known for frequenting European film festivals such as Cannes, chose a long, red and black dress from Bottega Veneta, while Swinton donned a single-toned outfit consisting of a silk shirt, jacket, and pants by Delpozo. Given that Swinton’s unique ensemble was designed by a Spanish creator, it appears to be an appropriate selection when promoting a film directed by one of Spain’s most revered auteurs.

However, what sets it apart is the exploration of female friendship, a theme that is seldom depicted, especially when it comes to older women. I can’t think of many filmmakers who would tackle such a subject matter. Of course, we have romantic relationships and familial bonds, but the significance of friendships should not be underestimated. They are incredibly powerful. The fact that this relationship is given importance, elevated, and presented as a love story in its own right is remarkable, and to us, it felt particularly significant, especially for Tilda and myself.

Regarding this topic, Swinton shared some thoughts on her perspective towards the end of life. “I’ve never been afraid of death, and I’ve never been so either,” she clarified. “I understand that we cease to exist, and for me, the process of accepting death has been a journey that started early in my life due to certain experiences. This movie, in part, is a depiction of self-determination – a story about someone who chooses to control her own life, death, and living.”

In his critique, The Hollywood Reporter’s leading film critic, David Rooney, refers to it as a “mixed collection that eventually pays off” by stating that the elements of melodrama and grandeur are toned down, resulting in a rather contemplative drama about life, death, and the duties of friendship. At times, this drama runs the risk of devolving into a dry intellectual exercise. However, without the presence of two such skillful lead actors, it’s questionable whether this piece would be successful at all.
